In Short
What used to be the spiritual and economic hub of black Durham, the Hayti neighborhood, had all but faded away. Until the Hayti Heritage Center opened almost a decade ago--community center, public space and art gallery. They do a little of everything: poetry readings, summer camps, concerts and lectures. Their mission: to showcase the art of the community and serve as a cultural outlet. In visiting the center, you'll see the old St. Joseph's A.M.E. Church, where it's housed.
