I stumbled on Hard Target Martial Arts at the beginning of 2008, and was instantly impressed. I have been doing martial arts in one form or another since I was 7 years old, and after earning a black belt in TaeKwonDo, I thought I was at a pretty good base level as a martial artist. I held no false pretenses about myself, but I figured I could handle myself pretty well. After four years in the Marine Corps I was looking to get back into martial arts, and Hard Target seemed like the place. I soon found out that my little black belt and combat experience didn't go too far against some of Sifu Hunter's students!
After getting my rear-end handed to me for several months I finally started to catch on and begin to give a little back. In those difficult first months, where many a student loses heart and moves on to other hobbies, I was never looked down upon or felt like the ""low-man on the totem pole"". Rob Hunter has always presented himself in an eminently professional manner, and that professionalism is reflected by his students.
The school offers a well-rounded program, from self-defense, to Jeet Kune Do, to Muay Thai kickboxing, to Kali and Mixed Martial Arts. In addition the school offers firearms classes, kids classes, and personalized self-defense workshops for women, realtors, and any other potential target group. There is nowhere else in Charlotte to get instruction of this level from an instructor staff, led by Rob Hunter, of this caliber.
Obviously, as a current student, I am biased to this school, but I will offer this: I have lived in several cities across the country, I have taken three different styles of martial arts over the last 15 years before coming here, have spent four years in the Marine Corps, gone to combat in a foreign country, and with all that experience behind me, Hard Target is the martial arts school I choose to call my home. I have never found anything even close.
Pros: Great core group of students
