My wife and I went to Happyland Pet Center to look at parakeets on October 4, 2010. While we were looking, we saw a few cockatiels in different cages within the same room. One of the cockatiels had plucked many of its feathers around its neck and one of the other cockatiels in that cage was nipping at the plucked one as well. We told the middle-aged lady there about it and she glanced in the cage and then walked off. We suggested that she move the plucked cockatiel to her own cage, but she pretty much laughed off that idea. None of the birds had any toys and there were lots of droppings in the almost empty food dishes and all over the rest of the cages as well. Despite this, we decided to purchase a blue parakeet that night and once we got it home to a nice cage with toys in it, it adjusted fine and became quite excited when he saw us. It took us about two days to tame him to the point where he knew the command ""step up"" and he would step onto our hand. We bought this little guy on a Friday night and on Wednesday morning, we found him lying motionless on the bottom of his cage. He had plenty of food and water and toys and space to fly within the cage. This was quite sad for both of us, and I decided to call Happyland to find out if they would offer a refund. The owner (a middle-aged male) talked with me on the phone and refused to give us a refund. He stated ""if it was half a day or even a day, maybe I'd do something, but 4 days--that's outta my control. It's not like I sold you a sick bird"". Birds of prey are known for not showing signs of weakness until the last moments of their life (otherwise if they did, they would be 'picked off' in the wild). It's an instinct thing. He then said that he just got in a 'new batch' of parakeets and told me to come in to pick another one and maybe he'd give me a few bucks off. So if the owner and his wife (the middle-aged woman) don't know much about, let alone care about the animals they offer for sale, I sure can't see myself buying from here ever again. I will recommend to all of my friends and family that they shop elsewhere as well. They way this place treats their animals like worthless commodities and leaves them to rot in their filthy cages is disgusting.
