Friendly service even at 9:00 AM on a Monday morning. Customers were being helped, staff worked together to make sure the product I received was of good quality (a challenging set of keys), and the popcorn was free! This is definitely a community store as the sales associate was having a conversation with a community member as he was helping me. However, he still did his job well. I will definitely go back to Hankins again! more

Take your business where it's wanted 10/31/2011

I asked the front staff member where I could find a particular bathroom water hose connection. She just pointed in the general direction of the inside of the store. I wandered the aisles until I stumbled on the right section. Then another employee was flagged down by two other shoppers in the same aisle. When he was clearly done ""helping"" them because he was walking away, I said, ""excuse me to which this employee responded ,""wait, I am helping someone else."" The other people looked confused as it was clear they were done needing help. So this worker just stood there for a few minutes pretending to not remember that I had asked for help until the other people reminded him. Then annoyed he asked what I needed. I pointed to the sample that I had brought to which he pointed to the rack of over 50 items which were similar but different. I could have done that myself! He then grabbed one and handed to me. I asked if it was the same and he said yeah. I paid and went home to find that in fact it was different I needed one with male and female ends and he gave me one with to female ends. When I returned, I walked to the cash register and the same first woman was there. I told her I needed to exchange the first item and that I would need help sorting through the 50 varieties for hose. She looked beyond annoyed, rolled her eyes and shouted into the store that someone needed help. The same guy came and said,""I wondered if that first hose was going to work given that it didn't have a male end on it."" You don't say! So then he was a little helpful in pointing out that they only have female ended hoses he walked away and while I was still searching for what I needed handed me a hose that had a male end. I said oh thanks and walked to the register where the first woman was busy literally chewing her finger nails. I handed her both hoses and she handed the latest one back and she said, ""you have to bring the price of the additional part."" I said what additional part? to which she rolled her eyes again and said this one and pointed to the male end of the hose. I said I don't know where that came from the guy back there gave me the hose this way. She responded,"" I didn't help you so I don't know, you go find the price or I can't ring you up."" To which I said where did the guy go and she again rolled her eyes and said I don't know, you go look for him."" I told she was very rude to which she responded ""No I'm NOT!"" I went down the aisles and couldn't find the guy and ran into another worker. I asked him and he literally just handed me an item off the shelf that cost $3 and said here tell her to ring this up. I thought this was ridiculous so I walked over to the screws and bolt section that had about 500 items and found one that was close to what had been attached to the hose for $1.50. I went to pay for the two items and the woman just glared at me when I gave her the two items to ring up. No apology, no hey let's start over, or thank you when she was done, she just rung things up with the wand and left them on the counter for me to gather. I believe in buying local, I ride my bike to local stores but I would rather give my money where I am a valued customer. This hardware store is one of the worst places that I have ever stepped in and the last time I will shop here. more

Nice little, unpretentious, neighborhood hardware store 4/15/2008

I have not been to the MLK one for awhile but was in there a few weekends ago for some solvents and cleaners. Very helpful staff and free popcorn. No need to be a 'tool guy' to get help and information. Pros: helpful, within walking distance of both locations in NE and SE. Very Ol' School feel. Had what I needed and then some. Cons: Long line at register. No big deal though. more

Great Neighborhood Hardware Store 6/3/2007

I have never been very handy around the house so having Hankin's in the neighborhood has been great. There has been a number of times that I have received help above and beyond for a purchase that totaled less than a dollar. I always apprecite the knowledgable and friendly staff which is something that I have not found at the larger chains. Pros: Location, Service, Knowledge Cons: Variety more

Not the finest service 1/21/2007

I went into this True Value because its near my house and I'd like to try to support the local businesses. The staff is not friendly nor are they helpful in any way. There was an elderly lady in there who was trying to get some help from a member of the staff, not only was she rude and argumentative towards the woman, but when I was at the register, she started bad-mouthing the woman to another checker who was scanning my items. Its as if they couldn't care less if you went there or not. I would rather drive across town to a home depot than support a business that treats their customers that way. Pros: Close to home Cons: Disorganized and rude service more
