In earlier reviews, 5 stars were only handed to establishments that were both excellent and community oriented. I am unsure of Hammersleys outside commitments, but I ate a simply fantastic meal Sunday night.
Gordon Hammersley has one of the longest tenures on the Boston restaurant scene. I believe that he started at Jason's in the 70s, going independent in the South End before it was fashionable.
Fulfilling my vow to not watch the Super Bowl, I reserved a table for 2 at 7. Super Bowl is a great time to walk in a restaurant, because it is not busy....My waiter, Larry, seemed happy to be finally waiting on somebody. We started with the cod and olive tapenade pizza on crispy flatbread, which was really interesting.
The signature dish at this place is chicken, which is somewhat an anomaly. When was the last chicken was the signature dish anywhere? Except maybe KFC...But it is really excellent, and I had the haddock after scoffing half my friends entree, which was also incredibly tasty.
The bread pudding is maybe the best I have ever tasted. The secret, Larry informed me, is brioche, instead of bread...It is nicely balanced with raisins in a caramel sauce
Service excellent, wine excellent, food fantastic......That just about covers it....
