Life is Good 8/25/2005

HHHunt runs Foxridge Apartment Homes in Blacksburg, VA. For some reason, Foxridge is known for being "far" from campus when it's really not far at all. It's maybe 1.5-2 miles from the Virginia Tech campus down Prices Fork Road and there is regular bus service to campus available. Foxridge is quite an attractive apartment complex. It has a tree-lined pond with a walking trail around it, tennis courts, two pools, other extensive walking trails, a few small gyms, two clubhouses that host various socials throughout the year, car-washing stations, and recycling stations. Foxridge is one of the largest, if not the largest, apartment complex in Blacksburg. It offers undergraduate living where the apartments are nice enough, but not spectacular. It also offers graduate student housing, which I've heard is a lot nicer, and is located in a more secluded area than the undergrad housing. Though many of the apartments in Foxridge are old, Foxridge updates them at a certain point. This involves changing cabinets out, changing water and light fixtures, carpets, and anything else that needs updating. I currently live in an updated undergrad apartment (used to be in an older one) and it's very nice. I've gotten multiple compliments on it in my 6 months here. When you sign a lease with Foxridge, you have the option of getting furniture, washer and dryer, updated apartment, and you're able to choose the floor (1, 2, or 3) you'd like. I've always lived on the first floors because it's cheaper and only the sliding door on the patio is wide enough for our couch. The second and third floors have balconies, and I believe the third floor has vaulted ceilings. Pets are allowed in Foxridge as well. In Foxridge, residents are responsible for air conditioning, electricity, and cable/internet. Foxridge pays for heat and water. Each building has a laundry room on the first floor with two washers and two dryers that take quarters only (3 quarters per load). Foxridge is well-known for its large apartments. This mainly refers to the 4-bedrooms. 4-bedroom apartments in Foxridge are just 2 2-bedroom apartments put together with the dividing wall knocked out. They're huge, and a great deal. The smaller apartments are more expensive, although well worth it in my opinion because living here is so easy and pleasant. Foxridge is one of the quieter communities with fewer (obviously there are still some) parties held than in most other apartment complexes around here. There are also more family tenants here than in most other complexes in town. Maintenance is a snap here as well. If you have an "emergency" like an inoperable toilet, they try to get someone to you immediately. If you have a nonemergency, they try to get someone to you by the next day. I've called in various things over my 3 years and two apartments here and have NEVER waited more than a day for maintenance. The maintenance and dispatch people are also very nice. There's a Food Lion, gas station, and bank within a 2-minute drive or a 20-minute walk. Parking in Foxridge is a no-brainer because there are a TON of parking spaces everywhere and you don't need a special sticker to use them. Thus, your friends can come visit and stay for days without worrying about getting towed. The only reason I left off one star in evaluating Foxridge is because Adelphia holds a monopoly on Foxridge for most services like cable and internet. While it's gotten a heck of a lot better in recent years, Adelphia still sucks a little more than the other companies around here that offer internet. Thus, in some areas of Foxridge, the internet tends to go out a little more often than in other complexes. My overall opinion is that this is a super place to live and I wouldn't want to be in any other complex in Blacksburg. Through visits to friends, I haven't found one that I like better. I really feel lucky to be here. more
