I was referred to Gypsy Cab Company for dinner by an aunt of mine who had lived in Orange Park for just a few months some years ago. I thought if she'd been a patron of this restaurant, a good distance from Orange Park, it must be wonderful. I went once with my grandparents, who were thankfully handling the bill as the dinners can be a bit pricey, and had a chicken dish that was quite good but it is the sort of restaurant that has you regretting what you ordered because everything else suddenly looks so good. This is probably due to their interesting "urban cuisine" theme, which considers that any cuisine in a big city will draw originally from the cuisine of many nations. My grandfather loved his lamb, and reiterated it many times. The interior is very stylish and elegant.
I went just Saturday for lunch for the first time with my boyfriend's parents, and was surprised at the reasonable prices (considering that they serve a few of the same dishes later on for dinner, such as Gypsy Chicken). I had the baked ziti, which was great. It was served next door at the grill that is usually the comedy club, but it was comfortably converted into a casual restaurant, before they line up all the tables for the comedy at night, which is also marvelous, but slightly over-priced. I would regularly attend if it were just a bit cheaper, as I am living on a student's budget. I thought for sure this would already be topping the list under Saint Augustine's best restaurants, as I have been referred by people who live in Jacksonville, including my boyfriend's parents. If it is worth the trip for them, it speaks towards its quality. Let's not overlook this gem, just minutes from downtown.
