Guvnor’s Vintage Thrift is a Park Slope Brooklyn institution, full of both practical and funky (60’s, 70’s, 80’s, here we go!) stuff. Guvnor’s goes above and beyond other thrift stores by hosting cool in-store events, like a sing for your discount Karaoke contest coming up soon. It has a roller derby atmosphere- they play vintage rock and roll at all times, and have antique motorcycles and other crazy decorations about the place. A lot of hip people hang out there, so it’s good for people-watching too. You can also sell them your used and vintage clothes, and they promise the highest price paid for them in the area (compared to other thrift shops). They also have a tailor on the premises, who can quickly alter your newly bought used clothes for you, for really cheap prices too!
What I love about thrift stores is that you never know what you are going to find. It’s like a big adventure. There’s no better way to guarantee you’ve got that “one-of-a-kind” look than thrifting…I also love vintage clothes because the quality of stuff made in the 50’s-70’s is better. This was before America became a throw-away society, and stuff was meant to last, and was actually made in America! They just don’t make dresses and clothes like that anymore. The structure, the tailoring, the construction is all cheaper now. The attention to detail is largely gone.
One of the easiest ways you can save money in life (not to mention, the environment, of which the dye/pesticide/chemical heavy fashion industry is quite destructive to) is by buying used… not only does that apply to cars, but to clothes, home goods, kitchenware and everything else… Don’t let your fears about the bed bug epidemic hold you back- you can easily make sure your used clothes do not have them by sealing them up in plastic bags air tight, and then washing, and most importantly DRYING (this is what kills them- the heat) or drycleaning them. Oh, and bed bugs have been reportedly popping up in all kinds of stores that sell new clothes, so whatever…
Why not score a designer or high-quality dress or item for 90% off? It’s probably only been used a few times anyway!
