Editorial review from Citysearch 10/16/2012

I recently moved back to Portland from Germany, and was quite surprised by their menu AND the authentic taste of their food. I only wish their beer menu matched how amazing their food is. more

Lunchtastic 3/16/2010

I had a yummy little lamb burger and fries and Mom had a delicious roast turkey with a fresh tomato/cucumber side salad. The portion and price was just right! The service was very good and the atmosphere was warm. Why would anyone with just a little extra time choose fast food? Pros: delicious, unique, fresh, easy freeway access Cons: figuring out how to get there from East of the building more

Huge disappointment 1/19/2010

Gustav's has always been one of our favorite restaurants since it opened. After moving away from metro area 10 years ago, we visited Gustav's last week. Fondue is half what it used to be and costs $8.00 for approx. 1/2 cup full. I ordered my all time favorite...Shepherd's Pie. The meat was different...turkey (I think) and tasted like it came from the part that went over the fence last. Very disappointing...although the service was fine. Pros: Warm & Cozy atmosphere Cons: Verrrry skimpy serving of fondue. more

No Way this didn't make best happy hour! 4/15/2008

Gustav's has the best fondue in three states. The staff NEVER gives me the ""oh boy"" look when I come in last minute with 7+ other people. Their happy hour is to die for although I am a little disappointed that the optimator chocolate cake came off the dessert menu. My favorites are: Optimator Beer, Fondue, and the Shepherd's Pie with Caesar Salad. Pros: Great Food Cons: Sometimes a wait more

Best Service, Busy at dinner time but worth the wait, Ask for Justin if you want the best service 3/11/2008

We went in on a busy night and once we were seated our server Justin made our experience memorable! He was so attentive and friendly it felt like we were eating at an old friend's house. It was by far the best dining out experience I have ever had. My family and I will definately return for more delicious food and I will be asking for Justin as our server. Pros: Service (Justin!), Food, Cleanliness, Happy Hour for all ages Cons: Parking, Long wait for tables more

Great Service and Food 1/12/2008

We love this restaurant ! We live 400 miles from it but fly in often for lunch here. The service has always been great - no exception today. The brats and kraut are excellent and they have great Rubens. The Rubens are HUGE, so make sure you're hungry. Pros: Great Service, Great Food more

JA! 11/11/2007

After spending a year living in Germany, I miss the food a lot. The atmosphere is very close to what you would find in Bavaria, only a little cleaner and brighter. Fantastic fondue! Servers did a great job and the manager stopped by twice and got us another round of beers. Knowledgeable of different styles of German food. Highly recommended and I will definitely be taking visitors here. Not as expensive as the other German establishments in Portland. Pros: German feeling, German food, German Bier Cons: Parking more

Great german food. 10/15/2007

I love this place. The food is excellent, the staff is very friendly and there is a certain amount of ambience. My wife and I have dined here alone or we have included our children and both experiences were very nice. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Pros: Food, waitstaff. Cons: Parking more

Great food, Great Service, Great atmosphere 3/4/2007

We have been to Gustav's several times. Our daughter, now 4, is always with us. They give a free plate of awesome potatos to the kids while waiting for the food. Everyone is friendly, very nice atmosphere, and more food than you can eat! Very nice place for family or romance. Pros: Good food, great service, very clean Cons: Lighting can be a bit dim for reading the menu at night, parking is limited more

Wunderbar Deutch Essen 11/9/2006

Great Food, Rocky is an awesome server! 10/30/2006

We were a lively bunch last week in for some dinner/drinks. The server Rocky was awesome. She was so helpful and polite. A few of us didn't make it easy on her but we (hopefully) compensated well. Thanks for the great dinner Rocky! Pros: Awesome Service, Good food Cons: Hard to get to with new street design. more

A Taste of Europe 12/23/2005

Ok, there are no German servers but the food is as close as you can get in Portland. Great specials, Spaten on tap ! and a pretty good Jaeger Schnitzle. Pros: Food, Service, Steve The Bartender Cons: Long wait on weekends more

Left much to be desired 11/4/2005

I grew up with good authentic german food and this place left a lot to be desired. The waitress treated us like she had better things to do than wait on us, all of our questions were met with deadpan stares and irritation. We had to wait for long periods of time if we wanted anything because it was impossible to flag the waitress down. Seating was fast and parking was fine at the hours we went. I guess I was disappointed because it was my first Oregon German restaurant experience, and I took someone there for their birthday. I don't plan on going back, I could have made the food at home. Pros: fast seating, parking Cons: typical food, bad service more

good german food 7/2/2005

the few german dishes they have are outstanding.. the seasonal dishes like the goose or phesent dishes are very good. try the cabbage rolls or the meatballs with spatzle. a small trio of sausages and bratts (need more different wieners). the lamb dish is very good and flavorfuly falling off the bone.. the schitzles very tastey.. the wine selections very german. and sometimes have wildlife dishes, such as hare and venison. but all in all a nice place to get some good german cuisine Pros: authentic foods, good wines, good service Cons: need more sausages, sometimes loud, the coffee more

dissappointed 2/14/2005

valentines dinner--presentation of our table and food was poor. Worked in hospitality fuild for 30 years. Found nothing about our evening to be special. Service was mediocre food was soso. Will not recommend or return. Cons: food, presentation, service more

Wonderful! 7/3/2003

Okay, if you're expecting a truly authentic German bier steibe experience, Gustav's really isn't the place to go... but if you want some excellent German (as well as pan-European and American) food, check it out. The happy hour is great, with cheap eats and drinks. Don't assume that German food is all bratwursts and meat - I have two friends who are vegetarians, and they both love the house salad, as well as the linguine (which isn't on the menu, but if you say you're vegetarian, they'll make it for you). I recommend the jagerschnitzel or the meatballs. The strawberry pizza is an excellent, light dessert. Highly recommended! Pros: Clean, Staff professional, Great happy hour Cons: Not much parking, Busy weekends more

Simply the Best 9/4/2002

I've never had a bad experience at Gustav's. The best food, drink, service, atmosphere...everything is wonderful. The only bad thing I could say about Gustav's is that the parking gets a little crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but no wonder. Well worth the walk if you have to park a ways away. EXCELLENT! Pros: everything Cons: parking, sometimes more
