We extended our visit to Northern Virginia an extra day for several reasons, but one of them was to eat another meal at the Griffin Tavern. We had an outstanding meal the first night. I chose one of the nightly specials - crab legs - and they were delicious. Lovely porch seating was available, but we chose to sit in the pub room, where they have good beers on tap (could be a little colder)and a cozy, comfortable ambiance. The second night we chose from the menu - a thick, juicy burger of local organic beef, with a side of onion rings (OMG, they were the best I've ever had). Worth starting with a full order. My husband's fish & chips were equally tasty - nice and crisp and malt vinegar already on the table. Take the time to visit this place! more

We had a great dinner recently at the Griffin Tavern. It was our first time there and we will definitely be back. The Sheppards Pie, with ground lamb, was delicious. The crab and corn chowder could have been a meal in itself and was likewise quite wonderful. The blue cheese organic beef burger was not only a great burger, the blue cheese was piled "higher than I've ever been before." The menu with local variations on common themes, e.g. Griffin wings, fish and chips, and fried oysters, as well as new directions for "barroom" fare e.g. pork osso buco, lamb loin chop, and butternut squash ravoli served with coconut milk sauce, compels a return visit soon. It was our first visit to the area and of everyone we spoke with, it was the one consistent recommendation for 'the' place to go in the area. It was great. My wife had the crab legs and garlic potatoes, I had a pizza with sausage and mushrooms piled high with both. The food was nicely prepared, the room comfortable, and the wait staff attentive. I couldn't think of a better way to spend an evening. I only wish it was in our own hometown. more
