Pediatric Psychiatrist 3/30/2007

Ditzy. Just did not connect well with child being treated. The solution to the problem was to hold him back in school. Medicine prescribed just didn't work and she didn't want to change it. Pros: Easy to get an appointment Cons: Located in bad part of town more

  • Greenville Health System Behavioral Health Services provides a complete spectrum of care and services to diagnose and treat emotional and psychological disorders in children, adolescents, and adults. In all of the programs, the treatment plan is individualized to meet the specific needs of each patient. A highly qualified team of doctors, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, and therapists work together to provide the best care of its type in the Upstate. We offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that is more intense level of treatment than regular outpatient services or a lower level of care from partial hospital program. IOP is a three-hour a day program that meets three times a week. This level of care is used as a transition back to the community along with strengthening acquired coping skills or introducing new ones. The IOP Program offers group, family, and individual therapy, goal setting, and skills management. Program hours are from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Groups are designed to focus on the “here and now,” assisting you in identifying problems and formulating solutions for a healthy future. The goal of this program is to assist you, the patient, in making changes and decisions, which will lead, to a healthier, happier life. Your treatment team will involve you in developing a care plan, which will address some of these needed changes. Group therapies will be used to assist you in confronting the issues that brought you into IOP. Medications may be used to help you in managing your psychiatric symptoms. All forms of treatment are designed to meet the original goal of improving your level of functioning at home and/or work.. Skills for Daily Living Skills for Daily Living covers a number of skills we use each day to help us function effectively. Included are building self-esteem,assertiveness training, stress and anger management, relaxation exercises, rational thinking, and goal setting. In each session, clients are presented with some basic information about the subject, are encouraged to participate in discussion, and to complete an activity in which they are asked to apply the concepts to themselves. Homework assignments may also be given. Goal Setting Patients are instructed in the basic concept of setting daily, structured goals by exploring the types of goals (both daily/short-term and achievement-oriented/long-term) and how to recognize the therapeutic significance of this exercise. Patients are instructed to bring 5 written daily goals to each group and are required to set one of these goals as ‘nurturing’ to encourage the need to schedule time for oneself. The main criteria for these goals are that they be measurable, attainable, beneficial, and desirable. Group Therapy On a daily basis patients participate in group therapy session led by a licensed master’s level therapist/professional. The group focus is on the “here and now.” Goals include imparting information, instilling a sense of hope, creating an atmosphere of universality and providing a safe and supportive environment to acquire information and/or obtain personal insight. The topics will fall into four broad categories: 1) What is and how to cope with mood disorders,2) application of cognitive behavioral therapy techniques and delectable behavioral skills,3) the management of day-to-day stressors,4) skills for improving interpersonal effectiveness,5) spiritual /holistic wellness. Individual and Family Therapy Individual therapy session is scheduled weekly with your therapist. Family involvement is offered and encouraged. Mental Health Concepts The focus of this group is on patient education, with the style of instruction being informal teaching, discussion, handouts and videos. The overall goal is to increase knowledge of issues related to mental disorders and current life stressors, and to assist you in being pro-active in your own treatment. These groups focus on 1) nutritional balance 2) medication management and education 3) relaxation techniques and 4) communication and organizational skills.
