G&S Produce (Green Start), just down Orlando Ave. from a run-of-the-mill Publix, offers fresh, local produce and a limited amount of groceries.
Their selection includes fresh packets of herbs for a dollar apiece: basil, mint, and rosemary. They have bins of mushrooms and bulk nuts, onions and a wide selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
They may not have the same selection of expected fruits and vegetables as Publix: produce flown in from around the world to satisfy consumer expectations. Their produce is fresher, however - ugly tomatoes ripe from the vine, and strawberries from Plant City instead of California.
You do have to check through carefully; already ripe fruit has sometimes gotten a little too ripe.
But I have been very happy with the quality overall, and I usually leave with two bulging bags of watercress, squash, apples, strawberries, shallots, cucumbers, fresh lychee in lychee season, or other great produce for under fifteen dollars.
