Best

If you go, ask what fresh vegetables are available and what fresh fish are available. they have a combination where they take a whole fish, make a soup, a main dish and a vegetab...

Worst

A friend and I went there for lunch this weekend. It took us 45 minutes to get our food, and we watched a whole family of 6 get food, eat and leave before we ever got our food. It...

Hands down loser 4/29/2003

Tried too many Chinese restaurants to count, this is the worst. Drive by and check out the miniscule % of tables that are occupied. Many of the classic dishes were bland, some we passed on all together. Go a few doors down either way for a much better experience. Pros: no wait! (but why?) Cons: most dishes more

How? Just How? 3/11/2003

How in the world can this restaurant be rated as one of the best? Lousy food, pathetic service, what ambience? Those lunch specials with fried rice, chow mein, or chop suey are just garbage food. I went back a second time only because I was with a group. The fried rice was dried and tasted like they were made the day before. Chow mein and chop suey were too salty. Even the small shimps were not devained, so there were some crunch to the bite. Itty Bitty shrimp and a humongous batter(uncooked). Table was dirty, as were the utensils and I suspect that the food wasn't prepared with much care of cleanliness. Expect absolutely minimum waiting and no smiles. Cons: disgusting food, unfriendly staff of, one more

Finally!! Found good Chinese in PDX 2/12/2003

We moved to Portland last year and have been in search of some good chinese food since. We found it in the golden horse. The ambience ain't much, but the food is really very good. We ordered hot and sour soup, it was the only slight disapointent of the meal though not terrible. Also had the mo shu chicken (not on the menu with chicken but they made it no problem) and the pork spareribs with black bean sauce. Both were really good and cheap. We'll be back. Pros: yummy food, inexpensive Cons: downtown parking, no atmosphere more

Meal fit for a Horse 2/11/2003

There were two really amazing things that happened that night. The first was the (only) waitress' service. She spoke only three words in seating me down, taking my order and waiting on me. As I walked in, she asked ""One?"" and then pointed me to a small table in the middle of the restaurant to seat myself down while she was headed into the kitchen. When I had put down the menu she comes over and just stands next to me, so I order House Chow Fun. She then repeats after me as she turns around to head back into the kitchen. About ten minutes later I was served the largest and one of the tastiest Chow Fun I've ever had. The portion was large enough for two people. Anyway, the waitress never again returned to my table or said anything, thus ending the shortest waitress encounter of my life. Pros: good food, gigantic portions Cons: terse service, modest ambience more

Best Chinese is Portland! 1/23/2003

You can tell how good a Chinese place is by how many Chinese people are eating there. The ""Horse"" knows how to keep it real. Lunch menu has big portions for little money. A tip: Order off the specialties side not on the lunch specials. The duck rice and the beef and tofu are sure to please. As for the dinners, they offer a a banquet menu that can serve a large party of about 8 people for under $40! The menu is written in Chinese - the adventurous diners will just pick one and wait for the food. Yes - the place is kinda run down and the service is authentic loud Chinese women. Hey, I'm here for the food - got it? Pros: Food, Value, Keepin' it real Cons: Ambience, Service more

Authentic grubs 1/18/2003

If you crave for authentic Hong Kong style Chinese, then this is one of the best I've found in the area. The menu is bit cluttered with diverse groups of offerings, but if you take the time to go through the maze, there are some hidden treasures to be found. The Prawns with Walnuts is absolutely to die for. Pretty nice portions on all entrees, too. As is the case in most Asian restaurants, the service is menial, but not too bad. Pros: authentic food Cons: so so service more

Epicurious? Try The Golden Horse! 12/14/2002

Having eaten at all the best restaurants in Chinatown and most of the other majors in Portland, 3 main impressions stick out about the Golden Horse: Very fresh food, overall culinary expertice & large very reasonably priced portions. The Golden Horse is a humble place. It neither screams 'Tourist Chinese spot!' nor 'Gymnastic staff will delight you!'. On the ""edge"" of Chinatown, it is often missed by the cattle stampede of tourists... and that's what makes it a satisfying quiet getaway. That coupled with the overall very good food (remember, no 5 stars pretense), the very attentive staff (once you've taken the time to know their timing and what words seem to get their attention) and the open large bright windows that invites the outside in, I would give this restaurant an overall rating of 8 as a reliable standard when the mood for Chinese strikes. ""Shin lee quai lo!"" Pros: Very Fresh full menu, Large Portions, Inexpensive Cons: Plain atmosphere, Average staff energy, Unexciting bathrooms more

Good food, horrible service 9/8/2002

A friend and I went there for lunch this weekend. It took us 45 minutes to get our food, and we watched a whole family of 6 get food, eat and leave before we ever got our food. It was good, but I'm not sure if I'll go back. Pros: good food, cheap Cons: service more

Lemon Chicken... (that wasn't chicken) 6/14/2002

A friend & I were hungry so we stopped by. I ordered the lemon chicken & she had a vegetable plate (I don't remember which one). When the food came we were both surprised, both by the portions (huge) and by what lay before us. Her dinner was well done, but mine was another story. It was supposed to be lemon chicken, but what I got was chicken covered by a sickly sweet yellow goo (think thick Mountain Dew) that was not lemony at all. I tried, but couldn't eat more than a few bites. That said, I won't go back there, but she might. The portions were large & her vegetables were pretty good. Under no circumstances order lemon chicken though. Pros: large portions Cons: bad food more
