Best vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco 5/18/2005

If you're a vegetarian visiting SF, and you can only go to one vegetarian restaurant, skip Millennium and Greens and hit Golden Era in the Tenderloin. Those two fancy places are good, but the selection and menu at Golden Era is unbeatable. The Pineapple Salmon in particular is outstanding. The only reason I signed up at Citysearch was to give this restaurant a top rating. It's my favorite place in the city. Pros: reasonable prices, amazing food, pineapple salmon Cons: sullen servers, plain atmosphere more

Mmmmmmm Good 1/30/2005

this is by far my favourite vietnamese/chinese restaurant ever. the food is always excellent, served very quickly after it's ordered and reasonably priced. The service can be kind of iffy depending on who is working, but overall a badass restaraunt. Pros: Best Vegan Vietnamese Cons: No Parking more

This is the absolute best place for vegan food! The prices are very low and the food is outstanding. The waitstaff are impersonal and slow but if you order take out you are just fine. Everything so delicious I have NEVER had a substandard meal there yet..and oh yeah the neighboorhood is a bit sketchy so go during the day or with people at night if you are a woman. Pros: Food excellent, Prices low, what more do you want more

Best veggie food in the city 2/24/2004

Golden Era serves great vegetarian and vegan Vietnamese cuisine. Even my mom enjoyed it, and she eats meat! Food is delicious and non-oily, and it's always fresh and satisfying. All of the ""meats"" are fake, made with tvp, seitan, tofu, etc. Try the Szechuan Pineapple Beef, Spicy Gourmet Chicken, Tamarind Beef, and the Lamb Claypot. Smoothies are good too; mango is my favorite. The prices are reasonable and the lunch specials($5.50) are a bargain. Note that Golden Era is closed on Tuesdays! Pros: Quality veggie food, Inexpensive, Lunch specials more

Soy Chicken With Little Grease? True. 6/1/2003

I've been to a few different asian restaurants where soy or wheat protein chicken/shrimp grace the menu, but this restaurant nails preparation perfectly. Just the right amount of oil to give the sauces kick without coming off greasy. Even the fried dishes weren't too bad. The portions are also Perfect. You never leave hungry, but rarely leave stuffed which is a big problem at some asian restaurants I've been to--trying to make up for quality with quantity. As for what I've heard about service, yeah it's not extremely friendly, but they're not unfriendly either. They're not there to be your friend, just serve you good food so you can do your own thing. I personally like not being bombarded with people trying to be extra nice for a bigger tip. People say ""the area is sketchy."" Come on. Unless you're not from San Francisco, the area is perfectly fine. Pros: Dumplings, Entrees, Portions, Price! Cons: No Liquor, Not Open on Mondays more

Try this restaurant 2/12/2003

Although it seems a little redundant to add yet another score of 10 here I had to add my opinion. Everything you've read is true. The food at Golden Era is amazing. For a vegetarian who's used to having one or two selections to choose from at most restaurants, I was overwhelmed by the selection at Golden Era. I had the sweet and sour ""chicken"" which was delicious and I have a list of several other dishes that I can't wait to go back and try. It is too bad that there's no booze there and it's true that the service isn't the friendliest but if you're just looking for great vegetarian/vegan food then this is the place. Pros: Great food, Inexpensive, Huge selection Cons: No booze more

yummy! Golden Era is the best! 2/8/2003

Went there today with 4 friends, 3 vegetarians and 2 healthy eaters. Was seated at a round table,a perfect fit for all of us. The waitress was wonderful. She helped us pick dishes that would complement each other and provide us with a wide variety of options. The resturant was clean and the staff/management was so nice. The food was delicious. I would recommend everything on the menu. We had 2 appetizers and 4 entrees and were totally full, perhaps too full :) . The meal, including 5 additional drinks came to just under 50 bucks, that's like about 12 bucks inc. tip. Wow! We went during the daytime and had no problems being in the area. The walk from Powell Street BART was easy and not long at all. I wholeheartedly recommend this resturant. Pros: inexpensive, vegetarian, clean Cons: far away from home, not free more

worth a visit 12/28/2002

After reading the editoral and user reviews, I thought I'd finally give this place a visit. It definitely lived up to its reputation and more. Spring rolls were good along with the mock chicken dish I ordered. Service was attentive, but not the friendliest. The dishes arrived after a short time from ordering, which was welcome. It's nice to finally eat at an asian resturant and not have to worry about finding fish or chicken broth in the ""vegetarian"" dishes! The area is a little bit sketchy, but worth the trek there. Pros: fast service, good food more

Great food! Great deal! 11/27/2002

The food here is really delicious. You can't beat the value. Honestly, for the price, this is some of the best food you can find. The only drawbacks are the location (near the Tenderloin) and the service that sometimes hints at unfriendly. I've always been seated promptly, even when they are busy. Thet have a large seating area. The food also is usually served promptly. The crowd is usually young and hip. Although, you'll find pretty much every type here. Meat-eaters should be satisfied here too. This place is a gem! Pros: Great food!, Good value!, Prompt service. Cons: Location., Sometimes unfriendly. more
