Editorial review from Citysearch 5/13/2013

Never in a million years, did I think I would be willing to write an updated review for GISFW-Arlington. But here I am. The new owner responded to my previous review and when I contacted him he was 100% willing to do whatever he could to make my situation right. He was generous, sincere and apologetic. He convinced me that he really wants to be a part of this community and make a contribution. He also believes passionately in the integrity of the GISFW program and the difference it can make in women's lives. WOW....this is a far cry from the attitude of the previous owner. I was/am so impressed that I'm going to give it a try for one month (free as part of his generous offer). I'll be back with another update at that time, but for now I'm feeling much better about this business. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 5/9/2013

Ownership of this studio has changed as of March 23rd 2013. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and apologize for any unfair experience under previous ownership. We want to make it right given the opportunity and we are committed to serve the community with the best intentions and great program quality that we take pride in. Come experience our program with new qualified staff under new ownership.\r \r Again, Thank you for your feedback. more

Current experience 5/3/2012

I think the whole experience at GISW has changed since Dustin Dietrich took over. There is rigorous supervision and detailed intruction, \r & follow up. Each woman's training needs are assessed and progress noted. DD calls me if I no show, and helps set up a committed date, time. I am very strong again, and I am losing weight due to individualized nutrition counseling with Jim Tully, the owner. Great Experience overall, and well worth the investment. more

Worst.Gym.Ever 2/8/2012

The manager is rude, disrespectful and maiplutive. There is no equiptment. They give you the same workout for everyone. They do not help children. they manipulate. they have caused many injuries and is overpriced. avoid at all costs. more

5 Star Written By Owner/Staff 10/18/2011

The 5 star ratings are written by the owner or staff members. Can you say OVER KILL with the praise. more

Nothing but positive 3/28/2011

I joined GISFW 6 weeks ago and have already lost 17 pounds. I have found the entire experience very rewarding. The trainers are great and switch things up and push me to improve. The nutrition help has been key in turning my body into a fat burning machine. I have tried NUMEROUS gyms and weight loss centers but NONE has impressed me as much as GISFW. more

Awesome Gym in Arlington, MA 11/4/2010

I've been going to this Get in Shape for two years now and am about to join for my third!! The trainers are great; they really know their stuff and help make sure my form is right on to maximize the results of my workout and to make sure I don't hurt myself. On top of that, they are sooo motivating, which helps when you are trying to keep yourself going! Go in and ask for the manager, Chelsea. She's very friendly and very encouraging. Love her and the gym!! more

Potentially Dangerous Model 9/29/2010

I have been a member on two occassions, and I belive the model is unsafe for several reasons. First, the schedule is booked so tight that the trainers have no more than a 2 minute break between sessions. Often they are the only one's working so they must answer phones, etc. during our training sessions. Also, the trainers have up to 64 different clients on a given day (16 half hour sessions with 4 persons in each session), which means there is no possible way for them to remember individual physical limitations, etc. Add the fact that the trainers are very young and inexperienced.\r \r More importantly there is no mention, space or time to stretch, and while I received conficting responses about this issue, I was ultimately told that research done by the creator disputes whether stretching is necessary. \r \r This might work for some, but I would suggest working with a place that incorporates stretching as part of their routine. I was injured twice on this program. more

Best thing I have ever done for myself 4/22/2010

I have had a great experience at Get in Shape for Women in Arlington. I have been to many gyms before and have not been as happy as I am now at Get In Shape. The trainers are excellent and find different was to challenge me every session. I am in better shape now then I was before I had my kids. I have lost 10 inches and am wearing clothes that I have not been able to wear for years! Along with a great staff, I have met some amazing women that are also working towards a goal just like me which is very motivating. I would recommend Get in Shape for Women to anyone that is looking for a support system and great environment to exercise in. Pros: they hold me accountable & have helped me get great results more

$3000 Mistake- Buyers Beware 2/11/2010

If there was an option for ""no stars"", I would choose it. I joined GISFW in Arlington last year and it was an expensive mistake for several reasons. First, I was injured within my first week there and it took many, many months to obtain a partial and unsatisfactory refund. Secondly, I was insulted repeatedly by the owner who insinuated that my injury and 4 doctor's notes were a sham. Thirdly, the workout routine is a cookie cutter approach to fitness. Whether you're 20 years old or 75, the trainers will put you through the same exact workout with little or no consideration for individual needs and/or limitations. Fourthly, their ""nutritional plan"" consisted of a one-page instruction sheet suggesting several protein shakes a day. Lastly, this was a ridiculous price to pay for any workout facility, let alone one that is substandard. With so many wonderful fitness centers and Personal Trainers in Arlington, it's just plain silly to choose this place. I for one have learned my lesson and now just stick to the basics; a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. I strongly suggest you do the same. Cons: Cookie cutter workouts, no refund policy even if injured more

Very good experience 9/22/2009

I'm sorry for those individuals who felt they did not get their money's worth of services. $3000 is a lot -- and a wonderful motivator. I train approx. three times each week -- which averages $19/hour. I have used other professional trainers, but never less than $60/hour. During the hour I am there I am always being encouraged and pushed to the extreme. It is difficult, but the results are wonderful. And when my form is incorrect, the trainer is quickly at my side to correct it. As far as a nutrionist goes, I find the owner consistent in his suggestions, and yes they are printed out. The ""problem"" I find is that I am not as consistent -- frequently diverting from the suggested foods only to find that I'm the one sabbotaging my goal. Exercise is hard; eating the correct foods for my body shape even harder. However, that's the contract I signed and am expected to comply with. Pros: Self discipline Cons: Self discipline more

Great place for a focused workout! 9/22/2009

I've been going to Get in Shape for Women in Arlington since it opened over a year ago and look forward to every workout! The trainers and owner are hands on and work closely with you to accomplish your goals! I've learned a lot of different techniques and it's been a total success! I recommend it to anyone looking for something different with great results! Pros: personal trainer, clean and fun more

A rewarding experience 9/22/2009

I have been a member of Get In Shape for Women for 5 months. I couldn't be happier with the staff that knows when I need a push. The trainers are so amazing. They are friendly and professional every single day. They motivate me to reach my weight loss goals with real solutions- nutritional consultations, frank discussions about what certain foods will do to the body, delicious recipies and ENCOURAGEMENT! Pros: Being guided by professionals that don't intimidate you. more

Life Changing Decision 9/18/2009

I have been a member at Get in Shape for Women of Arlington since it opened. Joining Get in Shape was the best decision I made. I lost more than 15 lbs and went from a size 14 to a size 4. Before joining Get in Shape I found every excuse not to exercise or join a gym. Now I would never think of skipping my appointments. I actually look forward to seeing the trainers and the other women to share workouts, new recipes and ideas. The owner and trainers have inspired me to want to work out more! In addition to learning new workout routines, I have learned how to make better food choices for my family and me. The Get in Shape program works for me. I have foot and knee problems so the personal attention from the trainers is very important. They always find new ways to challenge me, even after a year and a half. I continue to find new muscles that I did not know existed. I am healthier than I have ever been. I feel great! When my membership is up, I plan to rejoin. I cannot imagine my life without my early morning workouts. So many workout friends have inspired me. When people comment about my transformation I praise Get in Shape for Women for my success. I am glad they chose Arlington for there location. Pros: Scheduled Appointments with personal trainers more

Best thing I have done for myself in 10 years 9/11/2009

Joining Get In Shape for Women is truly the best thing I have done for myself in at least 10 years. I have tried the fitness centers at my workplace, as well as some of the big gyms with no success. The small group personal training has been the key for me. I need someone watching me, coaching me, and encouraging me to go that extra mile. I get all of that at In Shape. The trainers are young, but well-educated in fitness training. They are constantly watching my form, pushing me to excel while not risking injury. The owner has had proven success with the In Shape fitness himself, and as such is an excellent advocate and trainer himself. I have not been this fit since I started having children (in 1999). Last summer I could barely keep up with my children at the playground. This summer not only could I run around playing tag with them, but I could actually CATCH them! As with any fitness club, no matter how much you pay, you get from it what you put into it. And, the cost of personal training here is a bargain compared to what you would pay for 1-on-1 personal training sessions somewhere else. I love In Shape, and would recommend it to anyone. Pros: Small personal group training, encouraging environment more

Best thing I have ever done for Myself!! 9/3/2009

I joined Get In Shape for Women several months ago and I can only say that I wish I had joined a year ago. Yes, it cost more than some Gyms but for me it was worth every penny. I have never felt better or more energized, the staff and the women I routinely see at the gym are motivational and some are inspirational. I have lost over ten pounds and 12% body fat. I feel great mentally, physically and emotionally. If I miss a scheduled appointment at the gym I do not feel like my day is complete. I love working out at Get In Shape For Women in Arlington, both the owner and trainers have been supportive in helping me to achieve my goals . When people comment on how good I look and ask what I have been doing, I do not hesitate to tell them ""I work out at Get In Shape for Women in Arlington and I absolutely Love it"" Pros: Awesome Staff/Worth every Penny Cons: Wish there were more time slots to work out! more

Great Facility !! 8/26/2009

I have had a great experience at Get in Shape for Women in Arlington. I am a busy mom of three, and often my favirote part of the day is my hour at the gym. Before going to Get in Shape, I didn't even know how to turn on a treadmill. The trainers always find new ways to challenge me and are very motivating. This is one of the best investments I have ever made, I feel great and have more energy then I knew was possible. I find myself less stressed, and more confident! Pros: very motivating and the staff has helped me reach my goals more

A very expensive mistake 8/24/2009

I am new to Citysearch and hesitate to say anything negative about anyone, but when I saw the two reviews here for GISFW, I felt it important to respond. I was a member at this facility in 2008 and my experience and opinion are nearly identical to the two already expressed. First of all, the owner is not a fitness professional and knows absolutely nothing about nutrition. And he seems to feel no ethical obligation to provide any service for the very high price he charges. Secondly, I concur that his trainers are young, immature, at times irresponsible and gave me little to no input on my exercise routine. In fact, when I was a member, one of the trainers was repeatedly late in the morning and once didn't show up at all. Additionally, they could never seem to remember my physical constraints despite the fact that I saw them 3 times a week. It was appauling to me to have paid such a high price for personal training and then not receive it. When my membership was up (after 6 months), I left, never to return. I strongly recommend that anyone considering membership here, reconsider. This is not a place of value or integrity. I am sorry to see women being ""taken"" for such large sums of money when there are so many affordable, convenient, quality fitness centers in Arlington. Pros: Once the owner had my money, I never saw him again Cons: Overly expensive, failing to deliver value more

Expensive and not at all what they claim 8/20/2009

I joined this gym/weight-loss center to get some help and support for getting back in shape. The cost is very high, but the support that was promised would have been excellent, on both the exercise and nutrition fronts. Unfortunately, reality does not at all resemble what is advertised. The nutritional support is a joke. The ""diet"" is ridiculous and you receive nothing more than a couple of pages of badly xeroxed instructions and a brush off, ""give it a try and if it doesn't work out we'll talk about something else"". That's the nutritional support. Really. Exercise-wise, the trainers are very young, very inexperienced, and not careful about individual limitations. After months of attendance they continue to ask me to do exercises that are impossible given my specific and relatively minor physical limitation. But mostly they do little more than chat about personal matters. To be honest, that has begun to change for the better lately, but still the trainer support is not nearly what it should be. I decided to write this review after I read the other reviewer - my experience was almost identical - the problems are not just the complaints of one cranky person. If you are tempted to join, stop, think, run in the other direction and save yourself some money and regrets. I wish I had. Pros: I won't fall for this again. Ever. Cons: Everything else more

An expensive disappointment 7/23/2009

I am a member at GISFW in Arlington. I spent nearly $3000 for a one-year membership. Why so expensive? Because the franchise promises nutritional support and personal training, neither of which I have received. The nutritional support consists of a one-page, high protein, unbalanced, unhealthy diet, that no one explains to you, because they don't know how. The personal training consists of two young kids who give very little, if any, guidance or feedback during workouts. They seem to prefer to chat with members about their personal lives and look at themselves in the mirror. Despite the fact that they work with me 3 times a week, neither of them ever remember that I have some very serious exercise restrictions. The owner, who is not a trainer, is rarely there. When he is, he walks around interfering with everyone's workout, about which he knows nothing. So the good news is, I go and workout. The bad news is could have purchased a $200 eliptical trainer and gotten a better value. And I wouldn't feel like an idiot for wasting $3000. My strong advice is: if you want a personal trainer, pay for a real one. Don't join this joke of a facility. Pros: I spent so much money I actually go Cons: The value I receive for what I spent is very little more
