George's is one of those cozy homey restaurants. The atmosphere is pure Erie. Large blowups of vintage cartoons like Blondie & Dagwood and Frank & Ernest hang on the walls. I had the feeling that my mother might walk out of the kitchen at any moment and tell me to clean my plate.
George's still makes mashed potatoes from scratch. In fact, the sign still boasts it. Not only were the portions generous, but the food tasted as though I'd made it myself, which is not a bad thing! The sandwiches were definitely a full meal. I was pleasantly pleased to find the soup piping hot and the warm entrees still toasty and hot all the way through. The vegetables, especially the broccoli, were fresh and crisp. The salads are big enough to feed a small village.
The prices were fair for Erie standards. Burgers ranged from $4 to $6, soup, fries or coleslaw are a dollar more. The salads were a bit higher, starting at $6, but that includes a bowl of homemade soup, which is almost too much food. If you don't want soup, you only save $0.70. Club sandwiches are $6.29, seafood runs from $4.50 to $6.75, and of course, there are your traditionals like ham and Swiss and BLT for $4.25. Soda is reasonable at 75 cents a glass, and the pies and cakes range from $2.49 to $4.19 a slice. George's also has take-home frozen entrees.
They get quite the crowd at lunchtime. The crowd dissipates quickly, though, so a late lunch isn't always a bad thing.
