Geek Squad Alternative 8/5/2010

At one point or another we all need computer repair help and I am no different. I found myself in need at the worst possible moment. In the middle night, when everything is closed and the night before a report is due. I called Geek Squad online support for help and was charged for the $199 virus removal service. They connected to my pc and attempted to remove the problem. After a couple of hours and a whole lot of coffee and nail biting they call me back and say there is nothing they can do. This time, the guy I spoke to had a heavy accent and seemed to be calling from overseas. And long with this and the fact they said the virus is too embedded to be removed without causing further damage and system instability. I get off the disappointing phone call and am still sweating because this report is 35% of my overall grade in this course and I absolutely had to have this done in the morning. I run a quick Google search for a solution when I find SecureRemoteSupport[dot]com who provides online services and have a “No Fix No Pay” guarantee. Wow that would be nice if Geek Squad offered the same promise. Within an hour they had diagnosed the virus and had removed it completely for $105. And best of all, I didn’t lose any of my work and my operating system was completely repaired. Apparently the Geek Squad isn’t as good at their job as secureremotesupport[dot]com is. I really appreciate their diligence on fixing my issue and suggest others think twice before contacting Geek Squad to fix their computer. more

YIKES!! 5/19/2010

My name is Catherine Herbert and I don't know much about computers. At some point in the last month I believe my computer became infected with a virus. It was making my internet run very slow and I was unable to email my grandson away in Iraq. This being my only way to communicate with him I became very distressed. I wasn't confident enough to be able to attempt to fix it myself. Besides I hear hammers and computers don't go well together. :) \r \r I got in touch with the local geek squad and dropped my machine off. For $199.99 and three days of work they said they would have it up and running better than ever! This didn’t go down like the nice gentleman wearing black trousers had promised. 7 Business days later, I still had a broken computer and a quote for $449 to remove viruses, fix the hard drive and install antivirus software. Not happy with this price, and already out $200, I started calling a few acquaintances. \r One suggestion I received was to call Secure Remote Support. I called their toll free number to inquire about the cost and was told that they could remove my virus for $79.99 and could do it either by remotely connecting or if I preferred I could send the computer in to them. For time saving purposes, I chose to have them remotely connect and was assured if they could not fix the problem there would be no charge for their time. I liked the sound of that so I took them up on it. After about and hour the computer was repaired and I was ready to email again! No need to replace the hard drive. They did also sell me this antivirus software for another $59.99. It also came with a guarantee as well. They definitely did a great job, and Ill be thinking twice before going anywhere else. Pros: NOTHING! Cons: everything! more

Unhappy with entire experience. 3/30/2010

After having some family come and visit for a family reunion. I noticed that the computer was running slower than normal. It had been being used by the grandchildren and their parents to check emails and etc., so I wasn’t really surprised that it was affected by the additional use. I called around and got ideas of what it would cost to help speed it back up. I called Geek Squad and they wanted $125 just to come out and look at it. I was told that if my computer had been infected by a virus that it could expose my personal information to the world. This scare tactic prompted me into a hasty decision and allowed them to book an appointment based upon my fears. Their technician came out and started his service. In two hours he had found what he said was the problem and had fixed it. I paid geek Squad and they left. After a day or two , I turn the machine on to use it when I find that the machine is having a Blue Screen Error Message (BSOD?). I shut it down and restart it a few times, hoping that this would correct the issue. It does not fix the problem. I call Geek Squad tell them of what is happening and am told that it couldn’t be from the service that they had performed. I explain that it was not happening before they touched the computer and it only occurred after the technician had done his work. Again I was told it was not their fault and was told that if I wanted another technician to come out and fix that it would be at an additional charge. I couldn’t believe they wanted me to pay them to fix their mistake. I then asked for money back if they weren’t willing to correct the error display I was receiving. I was refused the refund and again told they were not responsible. Not responsible indeed, irresponsible is more like it. I had photos, and tax information on the computer that I desperately wanted to retain so I had to find someone to help me. I asked a few co-workers and they referred me to Secure Remote Support and a couple other companies. I called all 3 and had each one of them explain, diagnose, and quote the repair on the problem. I went with the company afor mentioned, secureremotesupport-dot-com. Because of the poor experience I described that I had before with Geek Squad, I was very gracias when the tech a Secure Remote Support was able to offer me a promotion to get the computer back up and running without me having to take it anywhere. I was amazed at the level of concern for me, even when it wasn’t a problem they created. I will never take my business back to Geek Squad after finding out what a real, caring and honorable business is like. My .02? Stay 1,000 miles away from Geek Squad and solicit the services of secureremotesupport-dot-com. Higher level of service, and they saved me a lot of money!\r more

What you are about to read is false and was written by a company called secure remote support to promote their business by ""piggybacking"" Geeks Squads Reviews. Where to start? I took my mac into the geek squad after a friend recommended them. I wanted them to install more ram, the operating system I had purchased and install an antivirus application. When my mac was returned, they had installed the ram i had asked them to, DID NOT install the new operating system or the antivirus that I paid for. Also the new operating system discs that I had provided them were not returned. I called and they apologized for not returning my software and would like me to bring the mac back into the store to have them finish the repairs I originally contracted them to. I took it back to them and in a few more days received a call telling me they were unable to find my OSX discs and started asking me if I was sure that they hadn't been returned the first time. I reiterated that they hadn't and that if they were unable to find my software what were they going to do about it. A manager then took over the call and said they believed that they had returned them and would not be doing another minutes worth of work to the mac because he thought I was trying to scam them. I was floored! Are you kidding? I argued with him for another 30 minutes before I was hung up on. I called their corporate office and still have yet to recieve a call back. In the meantime I was left with trying to find someone else who could help me. While writing this review I cam across others who had the same negative experience with geek squad. And many of them had to find an alternative to them. One that stood out was secureremotesupport[dot]com. I snet them my mac with my request of what I wanted done. In 5 days my mac was shipped back to me and was what I wanted from the beginning. I only wish I had found them before going to the geek squad. more
