Geek Squad Alternative 8/5/2010

At one point or another we all need computer repair help and I am no different. I found myself in need at the worst possible moment. In the middle night, when everything is closed and the night before a report is due. I called Geek Squad online support for help and was charged for the $199 virus removal service. They connected to my pc and attempted to remove the problem. After a couple of hours and a whole lot of coffee and nail biting they call me back and say there is nothing they can do. This time, the guy I spoke to had a heavy accent and seemed to be calling from overseas. And long with this and the fact they said the virus is too embedded to be removed without causing further damage and system instability. I get off the disappointing phone call and am still sweating because this report is 35% of my overall grade in this course and I absolutely had to have this done in the morning. I run a quick Google search for a solution when I find SecureRemoteSupport[dot]com who provides online services and have a “No Fix No Pay” guarantee. Wow that would be nice if Geek Squad offered the same promise. Within an hour they had diagnosed the virus and had removed it completely for $105. And best of all, I didn’t lose any of my work and my operating system was completely repaired. Apparently the Geek Squad isn’t as good at their job as secureremotesupport[dot]com is. I really appreciate their diligence on fixing my issue and suggest others think twice before contacting Geek Squad to fix their computer. more

Yikes! Better Alternative 5/19/2010

When my girlfriend decided to break up with me I didn’t expect for my PC to take the brunt of that relationships demise. I found it partially embedded in the front yard along with my clothes, “my now in more pieces” record collection, “special” pictures of us, my 2 month old laptop, and MY DOG! I loaded up my belongings and found new accommodations. When I finally settled in after a few weeks I decided to fire up the computer and see what damage had been caused. It unfortunately would not load into Windows. It started and got to the welcome screen but would then freeze and got stuck and then restart after awhile. I took it Geek Squad and had them diagnose the problem. In a few days I got a call stating that I needed a new hard drive, to have the Windows operating system reinstalled (+all my programs) and if I wanted any of my old photos, files and music, I would need also to purchase a data recovery service. He then told me what it would cost $650 total to be solvent again. Being a little skeptical at this point, especially because I had just bought the computer for $850 less than two months ago I did a little research on Geek Squad .After finding numerous reviews, with pretty much the same ending, I concluded that it was too expensive to have inexperienced, and overpriced high school students fix my ‘new’ computer. I picked up my machine and went in search of an alternative.\r My new roommate then told me about a company called Secure Remote Support. They had been used to help out in his office when a bunch of computers had got virus’ and infections. I looked them up on his computer and called them. I told them the problems and they said before committing to purchase their overpriced services to take advantage of their free diagnosis. I decided that sounded logical so I proceeded with the diagnosis. In 25 minutes I was told that the hard drive didn’t need replacing; the computer just needed to be cleaned and configured properly. And the Windows Operating System would not need to be reinstalled! He did recommend allowing them to perform a Spyware/Malware Sweep as well as an optimization service to speed it up to its full potential. I agreed to have them do it and within 45 minutes it was back in my hands and I was back on the internet. For the entire service it only cost me $104.99 and I even got a “No Fix No Pay” guarantee with it. It’s definitely getting far more for far less than the Geek Squad.\r Pros: open early, and late Cons: too expensive, doesnt follow through more

Geek Squad Woes 3/29/2010

My cat Morris has long since loved to lay on top of my computer tower while I am online. It’s warm and cozy and probably has a great view of the room as far as a cats point of view goes. So it was no surprise when I started noticing a funny noise coming from the inside of my computer when I started it up. The noise finally got so bad that Morris refused to venture on top any longer. It was quite a frightening sound. And then out of the blue the computer would no longer load Windows. Sadly I took my injured computer into the Geek Squad ER and prayed that they could perform some life saving procedure that miraculously reunites us like in Soap Operas. They took the computer and within a few days my diagnosis was complete. Death by Hard Drive Failure.”O say it ain’t so!” “It was so young… etc.” Then the technician mentioned that they could install a new hard drive, do data recovery and reinstall the Windows operating system. He then quoted me a price that almost sent me to the REAL ER. It was almost $500! I could almost buy a whole new computer for that amount. Feeling like I should probably do some “shopping around” I took my computer home. At work the next day I looked up a few other businesses that could help me but would be me within my budget. I selected Secure Remote Support because they offered me the very best deal on parts and labor. I had my computer back up and running later that day and had all of my pictures, music and files back too. Geek Squad was going to take about 1 week to get it back and cost 5X the amount. I was afraid I might have lost some very important honeymoon photos. It was less than half of what Geek Squad was wanting and I felt like I was dealing with an experienced technician not a high school kid in his first job. more

This Review is False and written by Secure Remote Support 3/29/2010

What you are about to read is false and was written by a company called secure remote support to promote their business by ""piggybacking"" Geeks Squads Reviews. I have teenage twin boys who like the internet a bit too much. They MySpace, and Facebook the hell out of their laptops. They shoot aliens and war craft like medieval mad men. They are perpetually plugged into these machines so much that I would swear the iPod appendage they have grown actually seems normal. So it was bound to happen that they would eventually need their notebooks cleaned up and swept for virus’. We took them to the Geek Squad and they told us it would be a few days and they would call us when they were done. A week later of the boys alerts me that he needs his computer for a paper he has to write. I call the Geek Squad and inquire about the computers when I am told that they have been extra-ordinarily busy and that it would another few days. I asked for a specific number of days and was told that he couldn’t give me and exact figure. So we waited another 5 days and I call again. Still there is no progress so we head down to the store. When we arrive was ask for our property back and leave immediately. When we get home I look up some alternatives to the “Geek Squad Run Around”. I came across Secure Remote Support and I actually didn’t have to take the computers anywhere. I just visited their website and selected a button on their website and gave them permission to connect to the laptops over the internet. And away the technicians went working on their computers remotely. It was like there was a virtual technician in our home working on it without having to have a stranger in our home. Within 2 hours the computers were scan, swept and sped up. Their service was fast, friendly and efficient. It was everything my Geek Squad experience was not. Thanks Geek Squad for wasting over 2 weeks of our time and introducing me to the lying cheating worthless owner of (Joe Clark of Vancouver Washington 206-920-8816) at secureremotesupport [dot] com. more
