And Shakespeare and Co. does it right. Twisty, windy shelves that you get to go around and around while trying to figure out where the rest of Self-Help or Science Fiction went. Oddball staff that can range from helpful to Comic Book Guy. Very old useful books, and very old car manuals. It's not a place to go if you have a specific book in mind, but it is a place to go if you love books and want to explore and enjoy yourself. more

A used-book store on Telegraph that isn't Moe's. 4/16/2006

This place has a much different feel compared to a few of the other bookstores in the area. The books are in shelves that go almost out of reach for most. Their selection is quite good, though the staff in my experience hasn't been all that great. The prices are a bit more than the usual used-book-store price, but they aren't high enough to work against the place. The atmosphere is one thing I love about the place, though: there's a true feeling of being surrounded by books, not present in most of the other places in the area. more

Shakespeare Books 3/29/2006

I didn't even know this place existed till recently, but I'm glad stopped by. There are some minor annoyances, one being the above average price for used books, the other being the above average height of the shelves; it can make it a strain on the neck to browse there. But, that being said, I've found some texts there that I couldn't find anywhere else in Berkeley, so they're on my visiting list now. more
