Mendaciously cheap! 5/17/2011

I heard of this place from a friend, who said it was a really nice store where you can get cheap computers and parts. I think the word 'cheap' is accuate, but not what I expected. I found out the parts are cheap, and the prices are not, which is antithetical to what I expected. I've been there 5 times or more hoping to find a computer part that I want, but have always found their thrift store has outdated parts at the same prices I could get ""New, better quality"" parts elsewhere. Here's why: their selection of used goods (in the thrift store) are basically a colleciton of junk parts which aren't good enough to put in their pre-made computers, which is their focus. So when you go in there, you're browsing a store full or rejected electronic crap. Today I was looking for a DVD drive with SATA, but they only had IDE ones. I asked them why and they said ""Because if we get one we put it in our pre-made computers"". I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea. This is the last time I am going here! I've vowed this to myself. I'm sick of being disappointed by this place. You may ask why I didn't call first, and the reason is they would not answer their phone. Their excuse to me was that ""they were too busy""! Well gee....too bad for me! The customer service there is also wanting. In my experience they don't treat you like you're a valued customer. If this business was not based on donations, I don't think it would survive because their attitude towards you is ubiquitously not service oriented. It's more like...""you have a need I can't meet and I don't really care!"" How does any business thrive with this attitude? What's all the hype about this place? In conclusion, I'd say this store has a self-aggrandized view of the positive impact they have on their community, and should not be supported! I feel that the crappy, outdated parts in their thrift store mirror this attitude they have which is basically ""Customer needs are last."" If you're looking for parts to build a new rig, try newegg, where the customer service is excellent. I am writing this to caution others from shopping here, so you won't have to be disappointed time and time again like I have. And if you do go, don't have high expectations!!! more

Freegeek is an awesome community resource! 5/8/2011

I do a lot of work for a local non profit group. A few years ago we needed some computers, and a friend told me about freegeek. I went to their website, and applied for a grant. They gave us 3 excellent towers, and two large screen monitors for our clients with vision problems. When I went to pick up the computers, I found out they also have a thrift store with all kinds of computer extras and cords. Since then they have helped us twice more. Since they helped us, we help more people than ever! And it helps the environment too! It's a win-win-win situation! more
