One of the most awesome areas in Jacksonville is Fort Caroline Memorial Park. Fort Caroline National Memorial commemorates the establishment in 1564 of the French settlement of La Caroline, which was a settlement of the Huguenots (French Protestants). You can walk the one mile self guided nature trail nestled under the pristine trees, explore the old fort settlement (Fort de la Caroline), learn at the visitor's center who's exhibits include a Native American dugout canoe and other artifacts from the Timucuan period, and enjoy the breath taking scenic look-outs.
This is the place where you can spend an afternoon with family and friends, or just get away for a quiet journey through time. It is free and the parking is ample. Make sure to wear your hiking shoes, bring mosquito protection and water for your walk. You won't be disappointed if you make a plan to visit the jewel of Jacksonville.
