Don't overlook the supplements 6/10/2006

The Food Mill has two locations. This one, the original, is half natural foods and half supplements and bulk foods, and the natural foods part seems to be an afterthought. The supplements are incredible - they have good selection and good pricing. I've been able often to get my health needs met more cheaply and effectively here than anywhere else. The new location is also on MacArthur, but much farther down near Broadway by the Kaiser building. That one is odd; it seems to be entirely natural foods, with some bulk but very few supplements. The oddest thing about it is that Kaiser advertises the "Food Mill Farm'acy" as if it was a Kaiser product, just because they apparently had the bright idea of convincing the business to come use that space. It bothers me; Kaiser is not at all alternative enough in their care to act all "natural foody," and in fact I suspect that the reason this location does not have many supplements may be because Kaiser doesn't want the competition. But hey, I could be wrong. Maybe they just wanted to sell people more food. Either way, I don't like Kaiser getting the credit when my Kaiser doctor will barely consider that a nutritionist might have a valid medical opinion. But that's more a problem with Kaiser than the Food Mill, although I do wish the latter would stand up and say "Quit acting like you invented us!" more

Best supplier of bulk spices in the East Bay 11/14/2005

In many respects, the Food Mill is just another over-priced natural food store. However, the bulk section is the real attraction here, espcially the bulk spices. This place has just about every spice, herb, pasta, flour, sugar--you name it--in bulk, all incredibly fresh and at fantastic prices. The Food Mill's homemade chocolate chip bars are another thing to check out--they're addictive, and a whole lot better than Chips Ahoy! The customer service can be pretty hit or miss here, and the parking is downright awful. However, if you need to restock your spice supply for a great price, this is a place you need to check out. more
