Go during the day. 4/19/2010

It's the Hand-in-Hand part 2 in the heart of Virginia Highland. Walk in after 5pm and expect this oyster house to be filled with the still-thinks-they're-in-college popped collar set. Pros: Decent vibe in the day time. Cons: At night? Hello frat guys! more

Fresh Oysters, Shrimp and Clams 3/16/2010

Groupon purchase finally got me in this restaurant. Passed so many times while eating at Murphy's or .shopping at Chico's. I was really satisfied with the GREAT Oysters baked Rockerfeller, Shrimp Scampi and Parmesan crusted oysters. Ummmm . Don't miss the sumptious platter of HOT Alaskan Crab legs, U peel Shrimp, Clams, Hot in the shell Oysters... AND come ready to work at opening everything and smelling a little fishy afterwards. Looking forward to my next forage. Pros: Tasty and Fresh fron the Sea! Cons: Is a Bar - with covered veranda seating -- smoking in Bar more

Sick from Oysters 4/26/2009

I tried this restaurant for the $5 Oyster special and got sick from this place. The location is great, but they are not keeping this place clean. The bathroom was dirty and the patio was not clean. Servers could also use more training. I have a rule to never return to places that made me sick so I will not return. I'll go to Six Feet Under the next time I am craving Oysters. Be careful if you order food. Pros: Great Location with Comp Valet behind restaurant Cons: Poor Service, Dirty Restaurant more

Cheap beer and oysters and chill spot! 1/2/2009

Fontaine was a bar that my boyfriend and I stumbled upon on one of our ""let's just get out of the house"" escapades. I admit, it was a nice find. Both my boyfriend and I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. He had the chicken fingers and I had the raw oysters, which were so fresh and briny. I was so surprised because you just can't get fresh seafood in Atlanta without paying out the a** for it. And the best part is that it was only $5 bucks, which is the special every Tuesday after 5 pm! $4 Heinekens, fresh seafood, and chill atmosphere? You can't beat that. Pros: Freash seafood with great specials! Cons: Mixed medicore to excellent service. more

Great Oyster Rockerfellers!! 1/1/2009

Went there for a pre-Christmas dinner and even though the service was a bit slow the food more than made up for it. I highley recommend the oyster rockerfeller. Perfect amount of cheese and fresh spinach on plump oysters. And the lobster bisque was full of lobster. Will definitely be coming back for more. Pros: Food Cons: parking more

Expected great food, but what about the service? 12/2/2008

My girlfriend and I visited Fontaines last Saturday and were treated to the usual great food and drink. While not regulars at Fontaines we have noticed a lowering of the service levels. We would like to congratulate the young lady working at the bar as she was the bright spot, always smiling and outgoing trying her best to make our (and other customers) enjoy our time at the restaurant. This was not true of any of the other staff on duty who seemed to be going out of their way to be illusive and neither of us can remember any of them raising a smile. We would suggest the staff model themselves on the young lady behind the bar who we presume was the manager. Good food needs to be accompanied by good service. 3 stars for the food, and one additional star for the bar tender. Pros: Great food, best oysters in town, great bar tender Cons: unhelpful staff more

This place rocks 9/8/2008

The oysters are incredible plus they have a cool scene. I love the happy hour and late night specials! Not to mention at lunch, you can really get in and out. Pros: patio seating, food, crowd more

Raw Bar 6/30/2008

The food is very good, but the bar is frequently crowded. The fresh oysters are excellent, the fried seafood PoBoys are not as good as other places. The margaritas are horrible, they use very cheap mix. more

great laid-back bar 1/5/2008

This was a great recent find for me. It has a cozy pub feel and I can only imagine how fantastic the back patio is in the warmer months. The service staff was very helpful and attentive. The menu is fairly standard, but the food itself is far from it. I highly recommend the freshly made spinach dip appetizer, and I do mean FRESH. Also, the grilled chicken sandwich reminded me of backyard summer cook-outs - perfect! If you are looking for a completely unpretentious locale, this is it. Pros: parking in back and no valet before 5pm! more

Service & Seafood With A Smile!!! 8/17/2007

We LOVE Fontaine's and dine there often due to the outstanding and attentive service and tasty food. The food doesn't disappoint, including various cajun dishes and specials throughout the week. They've even added the famous ""steamhouse bisque"" to the Fontaine's menu. The atmosphere is unique; you can count on fun quotes posted throughout the restaurant to brighten your week. The staff adds to the neighborhood atmosphere and overall charm. The last time we were there, our waitress was efficient, friendly, and personable. She never stopped smiling -- even when my husband teased her about her baseball hat and watch. As a frequent guest, I whole-heartedly recommend you visit Fontaine's often. I'll see you there. Pros: Great service, delicious food, excellent location Cons: Gets crowded due to populatiry more

Grumpy bartender, great atmosphere 8/6/2007

If you go (and I don't recommend it), don't sit at the bar. My friend and I went on a Sunday afternoon after laying by a pool all day and wanted a refreshing cocktail before heading home for the evening. The bartender was as rude as could be, hated being at work that day, acted like she was hungover or stoned or both. She didn't want to wait on us, obviously, and only wanted to speak to people that worked there. Couldn't recommend a refreshing cocktail, didn't bother with fruit, and was just out and out ugly. I'd been there before and had bad service, but considered it a fluke. I love the way the bar looks, and if you like Katrina oysters, then this is the place for you. Oh yeah, some fool ""mother"" had their child sitting with them at the bar with about a dozen smokers around. Nice! I only eat cold water oysters, and they don't have many of those. Used to like Fontaine's, but not any more! Stay away from the bar at all costs. Pros: Great neighborhood location Cons: Crappy, surly service from the Sunday bartender more

Horrible service overshadows good food 6/29/2007

After hearing rave reviews for months, we finally decided to check it out. Unfortunately, we left bitter and disatisfied with no desire to visit again. Pros: Good food Cons: horrible service, music so loud you have to shout to be heard more

Fantastic Oysters and Always Fun 2/20/2007

One of the city's best casual places to down a few oysters and a cold drink. Very authentic, great atmosphere (anything but chain or concept restaurant like). Staff is great, as evidenced by the number of folks we met who described themselves as regulars. Try anything on the menu. Judging by our experience you can't go wrong. Pros: ambience and value more

Just For Hangin Out and Downing A Few 2/19/2007

I tried Fontaine's late on a Friday night. It was packed packed packed! Shoulder to shoulder, butt to butt, breasts to breasts when you walked in... Everyone was friendly, smiling and of course, carrying atleast one drink in thier hands. We made our way to the outdoor patio which was much less populated. Had a few beers, sampled a couple dozen oysters and moved onto dinner. I continues with oysters -- YUMMM-O while my dinner date did the salmon -- big, moist, yummy. Pros: Fresh Sweet Oysters Cons: S-L-O-W service -- you have to practically be your own waiter! more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! 2/14/2007

Words can't do this place justice! I dine at Fontaine's regularly, and I am never disappointed. Table service is pleasant, friendly, fast, and attentive. The food is fantastic (especially the hushpuppies, bisque, & steampot). The overall atmosphere is fun; you just don't want to leave. There are also specials Sun - Thurs, as if I need more reasons to visit this neighborhood hot spot. I love sitting on the outside patio (it's heated and covered), and we never miss an opportunity to take friends and visitors for an outstanding dinner. If you haven't been to Fontaine's yet, what are you waiting for? Pros: Service, Ambience Cons: NONE!! more

Oyster's, Cold Beer & ""Fontaine's"" ! 9/14/2006

Fontaine's in The Highlands has been around for years, and I don't know why we don't do lunch there more often. It's the sister restaurant to the ""Steamhouse Lounge"" in Buckhead, but has a totally different vibe. It's like being in some small groovey, yes groovey, oyster bar off Bourbon St. in New Orleans. We always start with one of the coldest beers in the ATL, and a bowl of that tasty lobster bisque. Then on to oysters, half-shell, or prepared anyway you like. Our favorite is Oyster's Rockefeller. I'm starting to get hungry again, just thinking about them. Pros: Lobster Bisque, Oyster's, Steamed Shrimp! Cons: Parking In The Highlands, Always A Hassel! more

Great Place, but Service has gone downhill 7/4/2006

I used to go to Fontaine's weekly. The service used to be incredible, quick, and attentive. The drinks used to be strong and came quickly to the table. The food is always good. The place had a laidback vibe with Blues music playing and friendly staff. What happened?! The last two times I went, we sat outside and the servers ignored our table. Recently, we had to ask to get menus and then waited about 25 minutes before telling the waitress that we were ready to order our food. The last two times I went, the servers were rude, acted as if they couldn't be bothered with us, and never checked on how we were doing. If the staff is too busy, then the management should hire more servers for busy evenings and knock off the snooty servers who act as if they work for the DMV. I wish the old staff still worked there. Pros: Great Food, Nice atmosphere with Outside Seating Cons: Bad Service more

Great food, prices, and service 1/2/2006

We discovered Fontaine's by accident but now consider it our new favorite in Virginina Highland. The Monday night special $4 1/2 lb. peel and eat shrimp was excellent and an amazing deal. The gumbo and cajun riceballs were excellent as well - all for amazingly low prices. Our server was attentive and speedy and it was a great experience overall. The menu has so many different seafood dishes to offer that we will be back many times before we ever get the same thing twice. Pros: Central VaHi location, Great Food, Inexpensive more

Disgustingly horrible 12/5/2005

Clue1: Lethargic waitress with 3lbs of food splatter on her clothing. Clue2: Watered down Coke that tasted like water. Clue4: My girlfriend's mom said something to me; I replied; she asked if I was sure it was ok. The waitress turns to me and starts forcibly saying ""What!? What's wrong!?"" I said ""Nothing"" but she wouldn't give up...""What's wrong, what's not ok!?"" I finally shut her up by saying ""NOTHING."" My girlfriend ordered a plate of shrimp and hush puppies. There were 6 unappetizing shrimpies and four hush puppies on her plate. It looked more like an appetizer than a meal. I ordered the Turkey Club only to find nasty, raw bacon inside. I found the waitress, she said that was ""the way they cook it."" Meanwhile, extremely random songs would come up on the speakers at a blasting volume, which would then be turned down a minute later. Insane. Pros: it's in va highlands Cons: disgusting food, disgusting service, disgusting overall more

AVERAGE 8/28/2005

I can't slam the place, it's not bad, it's just not that good either. The drinks were affordable, but so watered down, that it explained the discounted price. The grilled chicken is so bland that the lettuce in my salad overpowered it. But the service is fine, and the hushpuppies and shrimp fritters are good (but you'll feel like your arteries are clogging up if you eat too many of them). Overall, I'd give it a 5 out of 10. Pros: location, appetizers Cons: food, drinks more
