Bad Service, Bad Food, Bad Experience...Oh yeah, Overpriced too! 12/27/2008

We wouldn't consider ourselves picky diners, but this place just didn't do it for us. My significant other and I read the previous 16 reviews BEFORE dining at China Grill and were expecting the following: great service, large portions (to share), great dining atmosphere (contemporary style), and tasty food. China Grill delivered only one of the above: the contemporary style. Here's what we received, instead: 1. A rude server with a grouchy attitude that passed us on to another server without informing us halfway through our meal. 2. Ordered the Schezwan Steak thinking it would be large enough for two people to share (this is what China Grill prides themselves on.) The steak tasted pretty good, but the portion certainly wasn't enough for even one person so we ended up ordering more food. We think the slow economy (and hence 40% full restaurant on a Sat night) is the reason why they are skimping out on food portions now. 3. The style and decor of the restaurant is nice if you are in to the contemporary look (like we are.) Lighting was excellent and the bathrooms were clean and tidy. Looks like the recession is affecting the attitude of the servers and, unfortunately, that attitude (and portion size) gets passed on to the diners at a hefty price. Save your time and hard earned money and dine elsewhere. Pros: Contemporary style, Decor, Clean and tidy bathrooms. Cons: Service, Servers had attitude, Food Quantity, Value more

Not your typical Asian experience-Fantastic Sushi 8/2/2008

We have dined in many different restaurants in Las Vegas and recently ate at China Grill in Mandalay Bay and we were very impressed with the cuisine and service at this spectacular multi-million dollar restaurant that features a main dining room which is a replica of a hollowed wine barrel with a unique ceiling light show during service. They recently added a sushi to menu with a Japenese trained Chef named Wai whose eclectic twists to well known dishes were fantastic. The main entrees we ordered were a Kalbi marinated Rib Eye (20 OZ bone in) and their Shanghi Lobster in a coconut curry plum cream sauce and crispy spinach that was the best whole lobster dish we ever tried. We agreed the price point was very resonable for a family style concept that emphasized variety, quality and team service. Go check out this great surpirse... more

The WORST dining experience I've ever had! 4/17/2008

While vacationing in Vegas with a small group of about 15 people, we picked up a menu from China Grill. The menu sounded great, so we made reservations for that night. When we arrived we were a little suspicious as to why we were the only customers in there (never a good sign for a restaurant), and why it took over 25 minutes to be seated (we had a reservation, and it?s not like they were busy or anything.) We decided to have a drink at the bar (the bartender was very friendly) and check out the bathrooms (way cool!) while waiting for our table. Finally we were seated, and our waitress started out fine. She made some great sake suggestions and took our appetizer orders. She came back and took everyone?s dinner orders. Then we didn?t see her for over an hour. Someone else brought out some appetizers, which were so small we ordered more. They never came. And neither did our dinner. A couple of the people at the far end of the table received their dinners and had finished eating by the time our waitress came back to check on us. When we asked why our food hadn?t arrived, she started sobbing (yes, sobbing) and said that there was a miscommunication in the kitchen and only part of the order was prepared. Our second round of appetizers had not even been started. By this time, we had been there for over 2 hours. Although we felt bad for her we made it clear to the waitress that if she just would have checked on our table once, she would have realized there was a problem. We asked to speak to a manger that provided the worst customer service ever. No apology, no explanation, no offer to make it right. He told us to leave if we weren?t happy. We went somewhere else and will never be back. Think twice before dining here. Pros: cool bathrooms, great sake Cons: terrible service more

Worst customer service in Vegas... 4/16/2008

This was our first stop on our Vegas trip last weekend. We had reservations at 11 PM. Our plane landed at 10 PM, so we opted for a more expensive limo so we wouldn't have to wait in the cab line and possibly miss our reservation. We arrived at China Grill right on time, only to find out they had closed the kitchen at 10:30. The hostess got the manager, who then told us our reservation had been cancelled. She couldn't tell us who cancelled, why no one had notified us, or why they would close the kitchen half an hour before their last reservation. The manager was unapologetic, made no effort to make up for their mistake other than to get us a table at Red Square. Bottom line... some of the most egregious customer service I've ever experienced. Pros: None Cons: Horrible customer service more

Outstanding -- try the Kobe Tartar! 4/2/2008

This place rocked our Asian-dining world. It was a great night out and we loved our waiter and the yummy sake, Sapporo, and Kobe Beef Tartar served tableside with a quail egg! That's a must-have if you have the funds to spare. more

Delicious Family Style Dining 10/3/2007

A romantic atmosphere, excellent food, and excellent service is what you can expect at China Grill. You must check out the bathrooms...way cool. Pros: Family style dining, great atmosphere Cons: Not located closer to my house more

Amazingly Unique 9/8/2007

The best fusion chinese food ever! I love this dimly lit trendy fusion-chinese restaurant. The dumplings are a MUST and everything we ordered was unique and great! Don't expect plain white rice to come with your dishes! They served onion stings with amazing sauces. Totally different in a great way. I even dragged my boyfriend to use the bathrooms as we were leaving....I had never seen anything like them! I definitely recommend this hidden gem at Mandalay Bay! Pros: Unique Food//Trendy touches//Great Service Cons: NONE more

Great food, good for groups 7/5/2006

I went last year for a Bachelorette Party with 14 girls. The food was great! The drinks were great! We had good service. We ordered a ton of food since there was so many of us with different tastes (half ate meat/half didn't) and a couple of drinks each. We got out of there at $60/person including covering the bride- which is a great deal for Vegas! The atmosphere is really cool, too. I've just made reservations to go back with another group... Pros: Food, Great for Groups, Atmosphere more

One of the best meals of my life! 1/15/2006

Seeking something "ethnic" this weekend while in Vegas, we decided to try China Grill- and this may have honestly become our new favorite restaurant in the country. First and foremost, the service was excellent. The manager checked in with us on several occassions to ensure the food was great. And, it was great. We highly recommend ordering the triple appetizer- this week's was the Duck Salad (phenomenal), Chicken Salad, and the beef dumplings (so incredibly tender). Our bbq salmon was fresh and perfectly cooked. But by far, the favorite event of the night- was dessert. Absolutely incredible presentation and taste. We've never been so delighted before by dessert. And our total bill was not that bad- great value compared to some other dinners we've had in Vegas... Absolutely hands down recommend this place! Pros: Wonderful service, Beautiful decor, Flavorful food Cons: None more

Great Surprise 9/15/2005

China Grill was our second choice to nearby Aureole; we chose China Grill because it seemed more casual, which was what we were looking for for the evening. Service was attentive and apologetic for the wait (we walked in without reservations on a holiday weekend). The bar was definitely the place to be; lots of great looking people with an evening-out vibe. Both the exterior and interior of the restaurant are beautiful. The food is great. We had a seared Ahi tuna dish and duck fried rice. Both were exceptionally good. I found the value to be exceptional, as well. Our bill (without tip) was a little over $60, and we had a ton of food left over. The quality of our meal was close to what we had at SW a night later, although we paid about $200 less. Pros: Ambiance, Food more

Food is not the main event here 7/12/2004

China Grill is a great place to go for a few drinks in the swank lounge and share a couple of plates with friends but I wouldn't say this would be my #1 destination for dinner in Las Vegas, not with all of the other choices at your fingertips. The food is very good but is expensive even though it is served family style. You don't necessarily get a lot for your money so you need to order a bunch of dishes if there with a large group. A group of 4-5 is ideal. The place itself is totally hip with an exotic look and the bar is definitely the place to be. You must check out the bathrooms as well. I would say it is a good place to try once but would go back for drinks. Pros: Chic decor, Food, Hip crowd more

Overpriced 7/7/2004

This place was VERY EXPENSIVE. The food was good but not great. It was also a little uninviting! Pros: Cool bathrooms Cons: , Unfriendly more

China Ill 1/26/2003

I think they should try to make this restaurant more warm and cozy. The food was alright but we were very disappointed in the desserts. Presentation amateurish, taste just wasn't there. Pros: none Cons: uninviting, Beetlejuice desserts, over-rated & priced more

Rip Off !!! 12/24/2002

10 people in our party and the food was supposed to be family style and it was sparse. The duck which was almost $50 was too tough to eat. The waiter apologized, but it should have been taken off the bill. Bad experience and these locals will never return. Let them gouge the tourists ! Pros: None Cons: Quality, Quantity, Overpriced more

Disappointing food in a hip setting 10/28/2002

China Grill is quite nice looking, but our dinner this past weekend was decidedly unimpressive, especially for the money. Szechuan beef ("one of our signature dishes") had so much gristle in it that my date and I literally had to spit out pieces into our napkins. Ginger and panko halibut (a replacement for sea bass, which our waitress told us is "endangered" -- hopefully they'll start captive breeding in zoos soon) was so bland it was boring. Our waitress was friendly and nice, but a little too casual, perky, and unrefined. Stir fried long beans were tasty. Overall, definitely not worth the money for dinner. Maybe for drinks given the hip decor. Pros: Cool decor Cons: Mediocre food, Not worth the price more

Not For Large Groups 10/25/2002

My mistake in going here was that I went in a large group. They serve everyone family-style and there just wasn't enough food based on what we had spent. The food was excellent and so was the service. The bathrooms were worth the trip alone as everyone gets their own private stall with TVs. If you go here, come with cash in hand and not too many people. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: Expensive more

nice!!! 7/1/2002

I've been to the China Grill twice-- both times for private parties. On the whole, both occasions were very, very nice. Excellent service, excellent ambience, cool bathrooms (you'll see what I mean), and excellent food--especially considering it was a fixed menu for our dinner. Pros: ambience, bathrooms more

Menu for Border Grill Mandalay Bay

Editorial
  • In Short
Across the way from Red Square (all vodka, all the time) and rumjungle (ditto, but substitute rum), this restaurant has a built-in fun quotient. The ultra-contemporary, neo-Asian decor creates a feeling of dining on the Pacific Rim of the future. The grill offers small plates with lots of flavors and doodads. There's plenty of experimentation with Szechuan beef, crispy duck and tempura sashimi. Presentations are architectural and high style.
