Founded as an orphanage in 1888, Five Acres is the oldest non-sectarian child abuse and neglect prevention, treatment and education center in the San Gabriel Valley and one of the few in Los Angeles County accredited by the internationally recognized Council on Accreditation for Children and Families Services (COA). Five Acres has been accredited since 1957. Five Acres is unique. Compared to statistics reported by similar agencies, twice as many children admitted to Five Acres have been physically or sexually abused. Twice as many arrive with moderate to severe impairments in their functioning. 20% more have at least four previous out-of-state home placements. Happily, 30% more Five Acres children in residential treatment compared to other agencies show moderate to significant positive results.
