Best

This is one of the better sounding music venues in the midwest. Quaint and clean, the ticket prices are always reasonable and the space is always nice. If you seek out the owner...

Fitzgerald's: One of the Top Live Venues Outside of Chicago 3/18/2006

I had the privilege of seeing Koko Taylor a few years back at Fitzgerald’s, and her live show pretty much sealed the bar’s reputation in my view as one of the best live venues ever. Not only did she and her Blues Machine band crank it up (catering to an “adult-only” audience, she was able to spice up things a bit), but the intimate space and excellent sound made for a memorable performance that unfolded literally 10 feet in front of me. It was even made more surreal about an hour prior to her show, when I saw Koko get escorted out of her car just as I was walking into the bar. Thank goodness I’m not a stalker. Since then, I keep my eyes peeled on Fitzgerald’s music calendar, and make sure to visit whenever a fave performer is in town. (It usually draws in indie, bluegrass alt rock and blues acts.) Not only is Fitzgerald’s a pretty historic venue (it’s been used in several big movies), but it’s a friendly crowd that blends in local regulars with visitors from Chicago and the suburbs for the live performance(s) of the evening. The ability to sit or stand up close to the stage is an added bonus—there isn’t a bad view in the place. I don’t know if any trip to Oak Park would be complete without a visit here (even if it’s technically in Berwyn—it’s still right on the border). more

really chill bar 1/13/2006

This is a pretty chill place to hang out! Its an Irish pub atmosphere and they frequently have bands of a variety of genres entertaining .. the drinks are reasonably priced because its far out of the downtown/touristy area and there's usually a great crowd here! They've got a huge outdoor patio too which is nice when its warm more

  • The Scene
Family-owned and run, this old-fashioned roadhouse is a musical institution in Chicagoland. Its interior is dominated by well-worn wood and funky deer heads with Christmas lights. The crowd--generally casual, though it takes its music seriously--is treated to a low, wide stage, plus excellent sightlines in the clubby main room and a balanced sound system. FitzGerald's is intimate, even a bit sweaty. The first row of tables and chairs is practically part of the rhythm section.

    The Draw
The long bar features a selection of micro- and macro-brews on tap. The atmosphere is freewheeling, especially when the polka-infused Brave Combo takes the stage. FitzGerald's introduced Chicago to now-popular acts such as Marcia Ball and C.J. Chenier. Every July it hosts the American Music Festival and sponsors several nights of performance poetry around Fat Tuesday.
