With Fisher Hawaii, Office Depot and OfficeMax all within a few mile radius of one another, how does Fisher stand out above the national chains?
Easy. They focus on office supplies and the variety that comes with it. At first glance, the chains seem to match Fisher -- how many different kind of pens do we really need? Dig down deeper, however, and it's obvious where the national control on inventory limits Depot and Max.
A good example: I was looking for a light blue, legal-size file folder. Depot did not carry that color except in a variety pack. Max did not carry it in legal-size. I went to Fisher and not only found that color and size, but also could have bought just one (instead of a whole box) if I so desired.
Fisher is not always the cheapest, though they do a decent job demonstrating (using large signs in the store) that they are competitive with Max and Depot.
