Our eleven month son just had a runny nose. Then, at about eight in the evening the wheezing began; then we heard it, the distinctive seal-like “barking” cough. After calling our pediatrician’s after hours line, our suspicions were confirmed; he had croup. We were given some home remedies to try such as sitting in a steaming shower and lying under a humidifier. While these did help minimize some symptoms, he hit a plateau and was still struggling to breathe. At two in the morning, we decided we needed to take him somewhere so he could receive a breathing treatment and steroid shot. A Google search turned up the address for a First Choice Emergency Room in Spring, and off we went. Upon arrival, we were cheerfully greeted and seen immediately. The attention we received was impeccable! From the technician to the nurse to the physician, everyone had a vested interest in not only our son and his illness, but also his and our emotional comfort. They were not only thorough in their explanations and answering our questions, they also took the time to engage our son when he seemed afraid of the breathing treatment and attempted to distract him from the “scary” machine. The physician requested a breathing treatment, steroid shot, and x rays to make sure there were not any underlying problems. She also gave us prescriptions to ensure we were aggressive in ridding our son of the terrible symptoms. The improvements we saw were almost immediate and every day our son got better and better. It is such a welcomed relief to know that we have someplace in our community that we can go to at any time that will provide thorough, conscientious, and courteous care and will most definitely recommend them to others!
