Firehouse Theatre Project Inc

The Firehouse Theatre Project is a small non-profit company with one mission, to bring to Richmond plays that would not otherwise be produced and performed here. And in addition to showcasing some talanted Richmonders, that is exactly what they are doing. While I'm sure the Firehouse would like very much to draw a full house for every performance, the plays that are produced are not choosen by the ability to attract a large mainstream audience. It is because of my experience in non-profit theatre that I can tell you that there is much consideration that goes into choosing a play that is meaningful and entertaining in some way. You may be delightfully surprised if one night you find yourself at the Firehouse and actually enjoying yourself. Tickets are usually not that expensive as far as theatre goes. Many shows even offer student discounts, weekend matinees and often run a "pay-what-you-can" night during the week to help fill the house. Season information can be found on the Firehouse Theatre Project website: www.firehousetheatre.org I think most people who live in Richmond would be surprised to know exactly how many professional writers, actors and other creative talent is here, mainly because there is little in the way of local exhibition. Artist galleries like Artspace and Art Works have been multiplying for the past 5 years, probably thanks to some VCU grads who decided to stay instead of moving to New York. Along with the Barksdale Theatre, Firehouse is doing it's part to keep talent and interesting theatre in Richmond. more

My sister and I went to the Firehouse Theater to see a production of "Bat Boy: The Musical" (I had bought the CD off of Amazon as a joke, and couldn't believe someone was putting it on locally ... how could we not go?). The theater is an old converted firehouse on Broad Street, and it retains a lot of the original ambiance, let me tell you. The stage is small, the seating nothing more than folding chairs on raised platforms off on one side, and there isn't much room to maneuver at all. How the actors manage is a feat beyond me. But the smallness of the facility adds a touch of coziness as well, and it reminded me a lot of the small productions I saw at college. If something else that I'd like to see ever comes to the Firehouse Theater (though in over a year, there hasn't been anything up my alley), I'd go again. more
