Better in Marlborough 3/13/2011

Good: Interesting beers on tap, good sides, and a very unique menu. Definitely the best BBQ in the area, with a great selection of sauces and sides, with great portions (big!) and tasty southern comfort food.. Bad: The service sucked, I mean SUCKED. The food tasted great, but the hot and cold stuff was all lukewarm, and it took forever. The waitress was impolite; "carding" everyone at the table for beer (some of us balding and grey) and refilled sodas ONCE throughout the entire two hour three-course meal - even then only because we flagged her down. There was no crowd, no fire in the kitchen, and no excuse. I don't set my expectations high, but she got a well deserved 5% tip on a $100+ "meal".. Improvements: Better waitstaff and lower prices at the bar. I understand spending $7 on an import, but local brews and Milwaukee's finest shouldn't come near $5. I'll give them another chance but if the staff is this bad again I'll head 15 minutes down the road to their other location. It sort of feels like a pricier 99 rather than a Fireflies.. Other: Firefly's in Marlborough is fantastic - maybe it's the fact that it's a better location (not a plaza, a building built for the restaurant, separate bar) but overall it just seems that the kitchen is more consistent, the waitstaff is nicer and more attentive, and the vibe makes you feel at home. I've been to the Quincy location too; Framingham is killing your rep, guys.. more

  • The Scene
With its standing-room only crowds of noisy families and young couples filling the colorful dining areas and welcoming bar, a weekend visit to Firefly's is not for the faint of heart. Those looking for a more relaxed environment in which to enjoy the restaurant's award-winning barbecue stop by on much calmer weeknights, or take their food to go. Overwhelmed servers try their best to keep the clamorous masses content.

    The Food
Despite its frenetic environment and sprawling menu, Firefly's pays close attention to quality control; numerous displays of awards its meats and sauces have won greet visitors upon entering. Tender ribs (try the lean St. Louis variety) and moist chicken benefit from preparation over fresh hickory, cherry, and apple woods. Unusual starters and sides include crunchy fried pickles, creamy sweet potato pudding and tangy cucumber salad. Sweet tooths leave room for huge, sinful slices of red velvet and Coca-Cola cakes.
