CLOSED INDEFINITELY!?!? 2/8/2007

Don't know if anyone uses this as a resource for dining anymore, but just wanted to put the word out there that Fernando's Hideaway is no more!!! Will miss all of the great staff, especially the very beautiful bar staff...hopefully this place will be able to resurrect itself in the future... more

great tapas, great atmosphere 1/1/2007

The tapas at Fernandos are great, we rarely get entrees because we eat so many of the tapas, they have a pretty good wine menu, the Azul is always great. The desserts are usually pretty good. They have salsa dancing on the weekedns which is pretty cool. Pros: tapas, desserts, wine more

Great Tapas 11/20/2006

The only problem with my meal at Fernando's is that the lamb was so good that great food before it didn't seem so great anymore. If I had more time when I visited I would have doubled up and eaten everything on the menu. more

Swanky 10/19/2006

Great tapas, huge selection and variety. We have gone several times, originally it was just for the fabulous martinis. Eventually we were sampling tapas and lately we bring a group (huge back table), order tons of tapas and share all around!!!! The dancing lessons are fun and it is so easy to dance the night away... Pros: Great selection of tapas, good location, fabulous cocktails! Cons: smoky, too loud if you are trying to have a date-night more

Love this place, but.... 10/3/2006

This has been one of my favorite happy hour spots for a few years, but I have noticed that the quality of the tapas has suffered: Some examples: the pan con tomate is now being served with canned tomatoes, which is extremely evident the moment you take a bite. Previously it seemed like they just rubbed some fresh tomato on the bread, which is the correct way to do it. The manchego cheese in the jamon y queso platter is of a noticeably lesser quality than before. The red ceviche was made with shrimp and octopus that was either previously frozen or has been in a fridge for long enough for it to be way too cold. The filling in the croquetas is dry, and the breading seems oilier. The chorizo is of lesser quality than before, as it is less flavorful and actually reminds me of something Jimmy Dean might sell. I used to come here for both great wine *and* great tapas, but now the wine is the main draw for me (for example, bottles of wine $50 and under are 50% off every Tuesday, and they have a great selection). Their servers and bartenders are still as knowledgeable, attentive and friendly as they've been for the last few years. But you guys used to serve tapas made of great ingredients and cooked just right - what happened? Pros: Great wine and drinks, great service Cons: Tapas are starting to go a bit south more

Hidden Away: Portland's Best Kept Secret 4/16/2006

When the marginal eateries of downtown are packed on a Friday night, Fernando's is a sure bet for a quick table, fantastic service, excellent wine, and top notch food. A fantastic date spot (whether on your 1st or 101st date!), the warm ambience and delicious bites represent true Spanish cuisine--reminds me of Madrid. Recommend highly for a quiet lunch meeting or night on the town. Pros: excellent service, great wine selection, close to Max more

A late evening surprise and treat! 2/8/2006

We arrived at Fernando's for the tapas after attending a stunning flaminco ballet performance at the Schnitz. Believing that Fernando's would be open late, we found out that it was closing in 10 min. But no problem, the head waiter tells us! So we were seated in the cozy, quaint dining room to enjoy tapas and a nice tinto. Our waiter was quite accomodating, not rushing us one bit. And since there were virtually nobody left in the place, we felt pampered. The tapas were very good (don't compare them with San Sebastian or Bilbao, Spain, that wouldn't be fair). We look forward to returning -- and think visiting Fernando's in mid week as we did to avoid the crowds is the way to go. Downside, some smoke from the bar does make it into the dining room. Pros: Reasonably priced, Good service, Nice ambiance Cons: Bar smoke more

Unbelievable 1/15/2006

quiet, romantic and reasonably priced...some of the best Spanish Cuisine anywhere. I was visiting from out of town, and we enjoyed it very much. I will be back many times! more

Very nice experience 11/29/2005

We ordered about 7 tapas, a few were really good while the others were alright. There is a wide selection so we will try other ones next time. Their spicy calamari was very very bland though. Normally we love calamari but we didn't even finish half the plate, which was a big plate though. The waiter was great and the atmosphere was comfortable. Another thing i didn't like was their small table we sat it. There is no leg room and the table tilts to the side if you lean on it the wrong way. I still had a nice time and it was inexpensive. The menu also doesn't explain the description of the tapas very well. We will still go back though and try again. Pros: Nice atmosphere, Good service Cons: Wobbly, small table, Some food bland more

The solution to Northwestern Bad Service 8/19/2005

Tapas and a largest selection I have seen outsice of Barcelona (Madrid and Bilbao Tapas bars have small selections) Everything was brought out almost instantly and traditionally prepared and executed. Some great Spanish Cava and a big brooding Priorat by the glass and I asm in heaven. Next time I'm in Portland this will be a daily staple instead of a one-night stand. Pros: Large selection, quality food, Service not problema Cons: I only went once more

Greatest Restaurant in Town! 6/1/2005

I love this restaurant, everything from the food to the service is exceptional! Pros: Fantastic Service, great crowd, nice big bar area Cons: none more

Great meal, except for the tobacco smoke... 5/24/2005

I generally really liked this place. Good food, service, value, variety. A group of us recently had a wonderful meal there, sharing all sorts of tapas, most of which were superb. The one (rather large) drawback is the unfortunate tendency of the tobacco smoke in the front lounge to drift into the dining area. That's a big drawback for me. Pros: Good food, Pleasant service Cons: Tabacco smoke reek, tough to park more

Fantastic Spanish Restaurant with rustic ambiance 5/21/2005

Excellent food and wine and the servise is very friendly. The Lamb Chops Tappas are to die for, if you are not sure what you like in Wine ask one of the waitresses, everyone is very well versed in Spanish reds. Pros: wine, food/ambiance, dancing more

What a great find! 5/14/2005

Fernando's was recommended to us by our hotel. What a great place! We chose several different tapa's and an outstanding bottle of Rioja. The prawns with chili oil are the best thing I've ever tasted and the Paella bites were wonderful. Our server Kiwi was friendly and had some great wine recommendations. We will definately go back when we're in town. These guys have tapa's down! Highly recommend. more

Mon Sherry 7/13/2004

I love sherry, and the couple times I've been here, the Manzanilla I've ordered by the glass was actually still fresh and aromatic, even though I saw they didn't open a bottle for me. Sherry, cigarette and tapas. I wish it was closer to where I worked so I could go there after a hard day. It's been a few months since I've been there, but writing this makes me think I will go this afternoon. Who cares about bastille day anyway? Pros: smoking, small bites, bar Cons: , downtown more

Muchas Gracias Fernados! 5/9/2004

WOW! Fernando's Hideaway was a lucky find on this website. I was looking for somewhere to take my Spanish Club and boy, did we go to the right place. The food was excellent (as said by my Spanish friends "very authentic)! The service was bright and friendly. The resturant is gorgeous and the mood is seductive. I had a wide array of tapas, including the Rosemary Chicken and Vegetable Skewers...to die for!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! GOOO!!!! Pros: Authentic, Cheap, fun more

Great entrees 1/13/2004

I know this is known for the tapas, but four of us went there for dinner and got entrees. We were all very pleased with the meal - and have to say get the pork! The tenderloin was unbelievable. Also a high light was the squash soup...so good. Our server was great and let us yap the night away for an hour+ after we were done. No rush to get us out. We'll be back, soon. Pros: service more

A meal of tapas 9/5/2003

I've been here many times and have always enjoyed their food. I have yet to stray from the tapas side of the menu though. If you want a table of variety and selection and want to get full on good food without paying too much, order 2-4 tapas per person and you will love it. They need to pay more attention to their espresso machine however, it tastes like it needs cleaned. Pros: Great tapas, Spanish wine list, service more

Just average at best 8/17/2003

Those familiar with spanish cuisine will likely be disapointed with this Portland institution. We had a group of 9 the other night and sampled many small plates. I would rate the menu as conservative - the array of tapas was adequate though not comprehensive, with an emphasis on unitimidating. Execution was also average- the food lacked any bold or distinguishing flavors. Service was terrible - the waiter knew little about spanish wines, and seemed determined to push us into the safest parts of the menus even after we had ordered anchovies and sweetbreads. Misread the table badly. Wine list ok - but would have loved to have a waiter who might have introduced us to some less-well travelled paths. Overall, prices are quite fair - with two bottles of wine, a pitcher of sangria for about $23 per head, tip already included with only one desert ordered. Pros: nice atmosphere Cons: unispired safe menu, staff lacks knowledge, uninspired cooking more

A Gem 4/13/2003

I have visited this restaurant several times and it's become one of my favorites downtown. The Tapas are always delicious and a good value. The service staff are friendly, attentive and knowlegable. Extensive wine list with many selectiojns available by the glass If you're looking for a romantic spot......reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant. Pros: Food & Wine, Service, Ambiance more

  • In Short
A curvy copper fixture casts a glow over the high-ceilinged front bar, which segues into an intimate brick-and-wood dining room with background Spanish melodies. A hip, young crowd dines on authentic Spanish cuisine with more than 30 tapas offerings, including Tortilla Espanola--egg, potato and onion pie--calamari in its own ink and quail in chocolate sauce. The restaurant's entree menu features seafood, chicken and beef dishes plus a list of complementary Spanish wines.
