When I was diagonsed with Stage IV colorectal cancer, I was devastated... total shock. As I'm sure you might imagine. At age 65, with a wife of 39 years, six children, and 26 grandchildren, and a competitive runner, cyclist, and triathlete, I still considered myself young and with a lot of life left.
But when I got the news that the cancer had spread to my pelvis, both leg bones, lumph nodes, and my liver, and that I had only 6 to 12 months to live, it hit me like a ton of bricks. But more than that, my entire family was impacted in ways that is difficult to describe.
Fortunately, my gastointerologist, Dr. Kumar, referred me to Ironwood Cancer and Research Center. There I met Dr. Ono and Dr. Nabong. These two doctors worked their hearts out helping me cope with my condition, and giving me the necessary treatment to extend my life.
I went through six weeks of radiation, six weeks of chemotherapy, and six surgical procedures during a three week hospital stay, suring which nine inches of my colon and rectum were removed.
When I went back for my second scan following surgery, the cancer was nowhere to be found. It clearly showed up on the original scans, but for this scan it was clean... gone. Dr. Nabong put me on 4 more months of intensive chemo to make sure any microscopic cancer cells that the camera (PET Scan) couldn't detect had been destroyed.
I have to tell you that the treatment I got from Drs. Ono and Nabong, physician's assistant, Scott, the receptionists and all the nurses that served me was way more than I could have expected. The ""bedside manner"" especially from Dr. Nabong blew me away. Everyone at Ironwood clearly demonstrated that they authentically cared about me as a person, but Dr. Nabong went considerably out of his way to show that.
These people... you might call them ""angels""... were put in my path to make it easier for me to get the physical, mental and emotional help I needed to get through this and give me more peace of mind, more comfort,, more hope, and an extension of time on this planet. They truly are not in their jobs or professions to treat cancer... they look at what they do as treating people who have cancer. BIG difference!
I fully, completely, and confidentially recommend Ironwood Cancer and Research Center and the very competent staff for anyone who needs quality care and treatment.
