Best

I don't know what Fab Fern's clubsodagirl went to, but i was not th Fab Fern's I go to. The staff, food and the customers are some of the best in St. Paul/Minneapolis.

Fair, but not again 2/26/2012

Good place for a large group and it is nice that they are local, but the brunch is not worth the money. Food is mediocre. Fish was dry - overcooked. Bacon cold, tough, sausages lacked flavor and were cold. Salads? - I don't like sugary salads. An extra $2.50 for coffee. Service quite good - but where were dirty plates supposed to go? Had to give them to staffers each time to get out of the way. No soup although on the on-line menu -- maybe it was that thing that looked like a thick white sauce but no bowls in sight. If quantity is more important than quality, a good place. Do not plan on going there again. Could have gone to a number of other places and had better food for the same amount of money (or less). Cost including coffee and tip about $20.00. more

Szechuan Chicken Salad 12/20/2011

Had the Szechuan Chicken Salad. The underlying chicken pieces have a nice grilled taste, but are coated with something that looks like a combination of jelly & barbeque sauce, and tastes nothing like szechuan. Request that they don't put this on the chicken and then the salad will actually be pretty good. And that sauce does not complement the salad and other vegetables. more

The bottom of the hill 3/16/2009

By day, lots of older people, okay food. By night very scary. gun totting, street pharmacists . VERY unsafe environment. Sad to have gone so low, fear of being attacked, just a bad idea all around. Beware of Fearful Ferns. Cons: Low Class Customers more

Ferns night out 2/23/2009

Ferns has a great atmosphere and a very friendly staff. Their specials change weekly, their walleye is great and their pot-roast is something so delicious, one hears about it in legends. As far as prices go, I cannot understand how people can think this kind of food is expensive, they must be use to fine dinning at Perkins or a lovely night out at Taco Bell with some desert at Denny's. If you want cheap hog fodder, head down to Missouri and pay a visit to Jack in The Box. Ferns is a St. Paul staple, a must see for anyone visiting the cities! Pros: Price, Specials, no wait, good food Cons: Parking lot can get crowded during peak times more

Ferns is Fabulous -- and Fun! 2/19/2009

Ferns is a great neighborhood bar and restaurant. The staff is friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is fun and welcoming. They also have the best wine prices in the area, especially during happy hour. I have been frequenting Ferns for many years and I will continue to do so. To people who've had one not so great experience a few years ago, I'd say give it another try. more

Staight scoop on Fern's 2/14/2009

Jayna is terrific one off the best waitsaff in the cities. The prices are very reasonable and the food is great. Fern's offers ""Early Bird "" specials at reduced prices has a good happy hour and a great bar crowd. The restaurant is seperated from the bar for a comfortable dinner experience yet funtions as part of the overall scene. Pros: Parking, prices, food and service more

Don't Bother 2/12/2009

Food is mediocre. Prices are too high. And, I found our server JAYNA to be very rude!! Dosen't say much for the staff. Pros: No wait Cons: Everything else more

Bad night at Fabulous Ferns 12/29/2007

We found Fabulous Ferns not so fabulous. We took our 4 grandparents there for a post theater Christmas get together at 4:30 pm on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was not busy but we had several very long waits for our waitress to check in on us. My son-in-law ordered a hamburger and fries which came out with rice pilaf instead. Pilaf and hamburger? Interesting. After bringing out all but one dinner the waitress asked if there was anything else we needed and then realized one salmon dinner was missing. She went to check on it and said it had burned in the oven and would take 5 mins to cook and that she'd bring me a bowl of soup if I liked. Several people at our table had fries with their meals which were cold. The salmon dinner never came and 25 mins later everyone had finished eating so I told the waitress to cancel the meal. She said there was nothing she could have done about it but she never came back to our table during that 25 mins to check on us or to explain what was going on. I talked to the manager and he said we wouldn't be charged for the meal that I never got.....thanks. Cons: Won't be going back more

Great Prices 11/27/2005

Maybe I am too used to the prices at Minneapolis restaurants, but the value here seems really good to me. Food we had on a recent Saturday night was great. My group of four was seated right away with no reservation. Mussels and Bruchetts for apps did the job and my pasta was above average. Heard no complaints from anyone at my table. Restaurant and bar split in half by automatic doors. Must have something to so with smoking ban. Only downside is ou waitress had no personality. Pros: Free parking, seated w/ no res, prices more

You couldn't ask for much more 12/12/2004

I dont return to Ferns too often, but every time I do Ive had a great experience. The Tuscan pizza is unbelievably good, and the Chocolate Obsession cannot be missed. The ambiance is great for pretty much any occasion you can imagine; from casual to near-formal. The service is spotty at times, but its generally worth it for the food. Pros: Ambiance, Parking, Food! more

disappointing 12/9/2002

I will not return here. The seating arrangement in the bar is odd, with reserved tables (I have never seen that before) and no one checking to see if the reservers showed. My wife and I were relegated to the most uncomfortable bar stool positions. The room is smoky, odd because it is very large. Our bar-type food was average or worse. Fried squid was tough (overcooked), and the wings were the tiniest I have ever seen, in fact I did not know such chickens existed! My wife's mojito was incorrectly made (with creme de menthe rather than mint) and tasted bad as a result. Everything was pricey: happy hour deals were poor and we paid 23 dollars/person for two appetizers, three beers, the mojito, and dessert. Pros: wood interior Cons: food, cost, drinks more

Great Place! 11/28/2002

Great casual atmosphere with excellent food and great service. Wine and alcohol for special evenings. Pros: Variety, Late Night Food, Great Wines & Drinks more

Fun Place 6/4/2002

Great place to have a casual dinner and drink with friends. The food is always good and it's always fun to play a game of darts or video trivia after dinner. They've also got some fun summer drink specials and outdoor seating. However, I did see a horrible band there the night of Grand Old Days. Fern's normally doesn't have live music and I think they should generally stay away from it. A bar can't be everything to everyone. I prefer to go somewhere else for live music. Fern's, stick to what you are good at. Great atmosphere, plus good drinks and good food. Pros: Drinks, Games, Menu Selection Cons: Busy more
