This place is truly a diamond in the rough!
Charming Americana is the name of the game at Ernie's Market. Marking the line between residential Oak Park and industrial Royal Oak Township, this place serves up quality food at an unbeatable price.
Ernie Hassan, the owner and chief sandwich-maker, is a delight. He'll greet you at the counter with ""Hey, baby!"" and perhaps a handful of Hershey's kisses. He'll slice the cheese and meat for your sandwich fresh, and ask you which condiments you'd like - peppering the conversation with shouts of ""Yeah, baby!"" Ernie's finished creations are monstrous, sometimes weighing close to two pounds and overflowing with simple, tasty ingredients.
The corner store also carries a variety of ""Detroit originals"" like Better Made snacks and Towne Club soft drinks. Its walls are clad in vintage paraphernalia, customers' photographs and news stories about the business.
Besides for the quality of the food and the quirky/enjoyable atmosphere, Ernie's prices are unreal. The most you will pay for a sandwich here is $5. This is NOT a typo!
What have you got to lose? Stop in so Ernie can fix you a sandwich and say, ""How you doin', baby?""
Pros: Price, Quality, Ambience
Cons: Long wait
