Great food 50's style 12/8/2009

If you remember ""old Vegas"" this is a must go to place. Family owned since 1950 in the same location, the food maintains a high quality at a decent value for the money. This last trip (12/09) we had the green chili burrito (smothered) and the shredded beef Burrito with red sauce - both were excellent. Other winners are the enchiladas, tacos and the albondigas soup. Lunch for four, including beer was around $55.Atmosphere is old time Mexican cafe - lots of Mexican kitsch mixed with celebrity pictures.Parking is limited. If you're downtown it's about eight blocks south of Fremont street - definitely worth a try. Pros: Great food, old style mexican cafe atmosphere Cons: Location is a bit seedy more

Best Mexican in Las Vegas! 12/13/2008

If you are looking for great Mexican food at any price (although this happens to be cheap), you'll love El Sombrero. This place has been in the same location for 50 years. If you didn't know better, you might drive right by it, but I promise you'll keep coming back once you eat there. more

haven?t found a Mexican restaurant better!!!!! 2/10/2008

My experience in the sombrero cafe has been wonderful , I haven?t found a Mexican restaurant better , I am telling you because that I am Mexican myself. Its hard to find a place that makes their food from scratch! Usually its imported or even worse made by a can etc..One of my favorite dishes include fajitas, Chile verdre(which is very popular ) , and the chimichanga , and for dessert the sopapillas! being in the culinary field, el sombrero has inspire me that its not about the food you eat but the nice noble service you get, long time friendship with jose Aragon. when arriving there I feel like that?s home. This restaurant has been there since 1956, the OLDEST Mexican restaurant in town , that?s why I consider el sombrero cafe as one as my favorite joints in town! Pros: wonderfull service!!!!!!!!!!!! Cons: wish that they were open sundays more

A little disappointing. 2/10/2008

After reading the reviews I decided to give El Sombrero a shot. We decided to eat lunch since one review indicated that it was cheaper than the dinner menu. I quickly learned why this place has been in business for so long. It is in a location with few restaurants and it seems to generate most of the patrons from the courthouse and law offices nearby. To be honest it is good for this place that there are not many restaurants around. Pros: cool hole in the wall aura..well priced lunch Cons: the food is just average w/ better options available more

Best Mexican food in Vegas...period 11/14/2006

A hole in the wall located on Main Street a few blocks from old town. Great food (try the chile Colorado). Low prices, family owned business for nearly fifty years. Not open on Sunday, but great for lunch or dinner any other day of the week. Don't worry about getting a cab out of there Western cab Company is right next door. Maybe the best kept secert in Vegas. more

Mexican Food just like back home... 8/19/2006

I have been going to El Sombrero for over 30 years since I first moved to Las Vegas from Colorado. It tastes like the Mexican food back home. Theresa and Jose are like family. It is the only restaurant I go to where they remember what I like to order and treat me like family. Once when I was on a special diet (but I couldn't give up El Sombrero) I did not eat all of my food and was not ordering as much as I usually do. Jose sent the waitress out to ask if something was wrong with the food. He had noticed a change in my eating habits. I went to the kitchen to explain to him and he smiled and was relieved. He thought something was wrong with his cooking. The service is excellent, yes the prices just went up, but the size of each item makes up for that. I wouldn't take out of town friends or family anywhere else. Pros: Try the Smothered Green Chili Burrito and the Cheese Enchilada's or a Guacamole Tostatdo Cons: Wish they were open on Sunday more

Never on Sunday 7/22/2006

Ate here in the 70's when we lived here..........Moved back in 2006 and the place hasn't changed. Food is excellent....people are attentive....the only serious drawback is that they are closed on Sunday. Pros: Food Cons: Closed Sunday's more

authentic mexican food 8/3/2005

this is the hole in the wall with the home cooking, not american style mexican food. Everything is fresh, right off the stove good! You need to try this place, it might become one of your favorites. Just try not to go between noon and 1:00, you might not get a seat. PROS: great authentic mexican food CONS: very small dining floor more

best mexican food ever 4/8/2004

My greatgrandpa loves this place..it seem for as long as i can remember everytime he comes here from lousianna we have to eat at this restaurant he calls ""the hat""..we just went back a few months ago and man is that food great..service is wonderfull, the staff is polite and did i mention great cheap food.if you ever want great AUTHENTIC mexican food check this place out. Pros: inexpensive, authentic food, atmosphere more

Best Power lunch & Mex food in Vegas 8/8/2002

I have been a weekly regular customer of the El Som for over 15 years. Tersa & Jose serve up the best Mex. food in town. Yes it's a hole in the wall...It is also where the Pol.s meet and eat... Just look at their wall of fame.. Ice cold beer, great margaritias, and mild to wild spicy food. You can't get a bad meal here more

good but a little pricey 7/24/2002

the food is very good, but the prices just went up and now its a little more pricey than its worth Pros: good food Cons: terrible parking, alittle pricey more
