Won't Return 5/24/2011

Have been here a few times. Won't go back. Used a ""buy one get one free up to $6"" coupon from the Entertainment Book and gave the server the coupon when we ordered. After we finished our dinner and it was time for the bill, we were told we couldn't use the coupon. I bought an entree for $10, my husband bought tacos for $6 (plus alcoholic beverages). They wouldn't give us the $6 tacos free because, get this, his wasn't an entree and if he had bought an entree, he would have spent more than $6. Huh? I was rudely told that any other restaurant would be the same way. The woman I spoke with was so rude about it, which is the main reason I won't go back. If their customers mattered, it would have been handled much differently. more

We Have Not Returned 12/16/2008

We were regular customers at this location for years. The food is good. The atmosphere is authentic. The prices are good. The nachos and fajitas are great. We have not been back in almost a year because of a waiter that was so rude to us, 2 times in a row. We have always tipped 20%, even at lunch and even if the service was not up to par. On these two occassions, the waiter had a very aloof attitude and would not give us extra salsa for our chips or meal without trying to charge us 1.50 extra. Also - my husbands nachos were made very poorly - I guess in an attempt to slight him for questioning the charge. This was very unprofessional and made us uncomfortable as to what they would do to our food. This had never happened in the many years we dined there. So - I was dissappointed to find that when we complained to the ""manager"" who probably was not really a manager at all - the entire staff turned on us. They were speaking Spanish around us and making rude remarks. I guess they are not aware that Americans like me are fluent in Spanish. Oops!\r Needless to say - they will NEVER get our business again. Pros: Good nachos and fajitas, served hot Cons: poor management / no management more

Great - especially during slow hours! 7/6/2008

This is mxican food at its best in St. Louis. The food is always hot, the servers are always friendly. The prices are great. We have never had a bad experience there. We usually go during slow hours and on Friday nights it can be hard to find parking, but it is well worth it! Pros: Friendly atmosphere, kid-friendly, affordable Cons: Parking can be hard sometimes more

Good Mexican Food and Deal 11/21/2006

Considering there are El Magueys just about everywhere in St. Louis, if you are in the mood for Mexican and a good deal there is probably one close by. The chips and salsa are awesome and as much as you want. Just don't fill up on the chips or you will miss out on the main course. Everything tastes good and the presentation is always appetizing. The staff is helpful and do speak English. And if you are up for it try a couple of Margaritas with your meal! Pros: Good food and service, nice atmosphere Cons: always crowded unless at an off time more

VICI 7/17/2003

The food was good, but not great, and not the best I ever had. The cheese quesadilla had the most horrible cheese, it was like white American or Velveeta! I was hoping for Monterey, or another Mexican favorite. It was not TOO expensive, but for the quality, the prices should come down! Service was mediocre, the waitress had to be summoned too much. Skip the sopapillas and the Cheese quesadillas. And also the taquitos were a bit overcooked. The salsa and chips are grreat! Pros: food decent, service decent, nice motif Cons: service could be bett, food could be better, Crowded more

Don't tell EVERYBODY! 2/7/2003

Soulmate and I have eaten there since we first arrived over two years ago. I was raised in San Antonio and have eaten fajitas from all over. We drive from O'Fallon IL just to eat there. They have, without a doubt, THE BEST FAJITAS we've ever tasted due to adding churizo sausage bits to the mix! Usually only order Especial for one and share due to the large portion they serve, however if your really hungry and want to take some home get the Especial for two. Have also ordered other items on their menu and have been very pleased with everything except the Margaritas. They don't seem to use enough tequila. Other than that OK, but remember DON'T TELL EVERYBODY (or you'll be waiting even longer for a table)! Pros: Inexpensive, Fajitas Cons: Sometimes crowded, Margaritas more

Hey, Chips and Salsa on me! 1/29/2003

Good food. Ask for Ramon on HWY K. I love the lunch specials!!! #1 Speedy Gonzalez is good! Food is delivered in no time at all. Saul was my favorite server until he left. Otherwise, a great franchise to dine in. Pros: Value, Quality, Promptness Cons: portions, smokingsection, locations more

Margaritas, Coranas, and tacos 1/25/2003

Margaritas, Coranas, and tacos. And their all cheap. What more can you ask for? Pros: Inexpensive, Good Food more

Good but...... 11/11/2002

El Nopal has better food AND better marqueritas......and isn't that why we go? Ambiance? Who cares......... more

Muy Caliente! 11/6/2002

This place has GREAT Mexican food! THe service is great, and we haven't found such good Mexican since we moved here from California! Go and enjoy! Reasonable prices, HUGE portions, and nice friendly atmosphere, too! more

Yo Quearo El Maguey! 10/28/2002

El Maguey is fine mexican dining. It is fairly unknown, when compared to reaturants like Chevy's, Chi-Chi's, Casa Giardo, and Taco Bell, but it blows all these other restuarnts out of the water. All the food I've eaten there has been excellant, and the employees friendly. It is moderatly priced but the value you good is exceptional. It is a bargin. If you're looking for good mexican food, look no further. Pros: Food, Value, Service Cons: Parking, Seating, You can't get enough more

Spicy 10/28/2002

It's the kind of place you have to go to every time you crave Mexican. The service is great, the food, hot and delicious. I love the salsa....sometimes the chips are a little stale or burnt but I can forgive that when the real food comes out!! Pros: good food, great service, god value Cons: sometimes crowded, chips stale sometimes more

family affordable YUMMY 10/27/2002

Enjoy eating there...my family helps keep them in business! Great fajiatas, and marquaritas! Pros: very friendly staff, inexpensive Cons: sometimes loud more

Hot Tamlea 10/22/2002

El Maguey's is muy bueno! This is a great place to go when you want friendly service, great food and lots of it. The portions sizes are more than enough. The atmospher is fun and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. This restraunt deserves a 10+ Pros: inexpensive, large portions, friendly service Cons: small parking lot, loud more

El Maguey, good to yuor pocketbook 10/3/2002

I often eat at El Maguey, there are i think about 4 or so in the st louis area (including st charles), Its not your Chili's, or Casa galliardo, or fluffed up expensive tex-mex places. Its pretty close to authentic Mexican food, its not a mexican palce were you see no immigrants in sight, most of the guys who work there speak very little english, so theyre cooking what they used to in mexico. The prices are good, the food is good, service is usually qucik. Pros: fairly cheap, quick seating, yummy food Cons: some lack atmsophere more

MUCHO GRANDE! 8/20/2002

Without a doubt the best in Mexican food. Tacos, enchiladas, and tostadas are all great. THe chips and salsa are great as well. The lunch specials are a hell of a deal. Pros: Inexpensive, Good Food, Fast Service more

Mmmmm! 8/13/2002

I eat a El Maguey very frequently. The food is consistently good and the prices very inexpensive. The waiters/waitresses are often very personable. Pros: inexpensive, good food, consistent Cons: no place to wait, parking crowded, very smoke-filled more
