Best

If you're up in the area, give this a try. The menu has many many items on it, and I think that can make one feel overwhelmed. I also think that it causes the restaurant to lose ...

Worst

A huge disappointment! Service was mediocre at best. Waiter had a bad attitude from the moment he realized we weren't ordering drinks and full meals. We are all trying to watc...

Best mexican food 7/12/2010

El Jarro is the best Mexican Food in South Texas. If you eat here, you've got to try the Maria Tortillas. more

Amazing food 7/6/2010

El Jarro is an institution! Hard to believe that I've been going there almost 30 years now. We always have amazing food, the Maria's Tortillas are a must and quintessentially San Antonio, the tortillas themselves are second to none - made fresh on site, and margaritas hit the spot. Their weekday lunch buffet is always incredibly delicious, and the live evening entertainment is the perfect complement for an absolutely fun evening. Thank you, El Jarro, for all the wonderful years of special (and everyday) events. Don't ever change. My only comment is that they're not open for weekend brunch or breakfast. That would surely be fantastic!? more

First time 7/1/2010

We went in for the first time on a Wednesday night. We were excited that it was fairly crowded more

BEST MARGARITAS 6/9/2010

There Margaritas are to die for. Granted they are about 10 bucks, but then again you only need one!!! Pros: You only need one Cons: VERY EXPENSIVE more

I remember it being better 5/16/2010

When I first moved here six years ago El Jarro was one of my favorite restaurants. I would go often for lunch and dinner. I must say that it has fallen off in both food and service from what it used to be. I'm not saying I won't go back, but I've had to lower my expectations of El Jarro. Pros: location Cons: service, food is average more

Lovely 2/7/2010

I have not been here in ages, but I must tell you that this is one of the very few places that take pride in serving authentic Mexican food, not like most that are down town and serve you tex-mex, oh no no no no no. Sometimes you have got to go a little bit further to find the nice original flavors that real mexican cuisine have to offer and have a great time too. Can't wait to try them again. Pros: authentic mexican food Cons: It's so good, there might be a waiting line... more

Awesome! 2/5/2010

Everyone that helped us that evening was so kind and helpful, even though we switched tables as our party grew larger. The music was great, the ambiance was perfect and the food was very good. Pros: Great Service Cons: Nothing more

Place is unbelievable 2/3/2010

Place has a great environment with a Latin flavor. The employees are well mannered and are there to help you with anything. The food is unbelievable. Try the enchiladas. They are very good. Not like other restaurants that put all these onions, bell peppers, and other ingredients. One of the top 2 Mexican Restaurants in SA. Pros: Great food and Great Service Cons: None more

Great top-shelf margaritas, overall a solid choice 1/1/2010

I went on New Year's Day with a tinge of ambivalence based on some of the reviews I read about this place. But I wanted to treat my parents to something new and so we went. I definitely would say it was worth it. I ordered the Pollo a la Maria and it was the among the best grilled chicken breast I've had, well marinated with a great spice profile. We requested a booth so we waited a while and in the interim we got top shelf Margaritas. They were excellent; they come in a small glass and cost $8 but they pack a punch. The chips are good, the salsa is what you would call organic and if you like salsas that emphasize the tomato then you will definitely like it. I didn't like he tortilla soup, it was a disappointment (I agree with what another reviewer said). I've known about this place for years, but I remember hearing about a bad health review perhaps years ago. The bathroom is kind of dingy and the lay out of the restaurant is a little awkward. But by the end of the evening I definitely say this place earned an A- from my table. I'm going to add this list to my favorite Tex-Mex restaurants which includes La Jacala, La Fogata, and Panchitos (on McCullough). Pros: Chips/Salsa, Original Approach to Standard Fare Cons: Bathrooms dingy, layout tad awkward and crowded more

GREAT FOOD, GREAT SERVICE, BEST EXPERIENCE 4/9/2009

The best dinning experience that i have ever had..Every time I have been to El Jarro, I have been Pros: great value all around Cons: no, all was perfect more

Huge Disappointment! 3/6/2009

A huge disappointment! Service was mediocre at best. Waiter had a bad attitude from the moment he realized we weren't ordering drinks and full meals. We are all trying to watch our weight! One ordered a bowl of chicken soup - very, very small portion for $6.50 (I think Ruth's Chris may charge this much for a bowl of soup!) and it was tasteless, very little chicken, mostly broth and tortilla strips. Another ordered a bowl charro beans which I swear were ranch style beans from a can! The other two of us ordered chalupas which were adequate but overpriced (neither one of us like the taste of the refried beans used) However, the decor is lovely! Won't be going back here again. Pros: Nice decor Cons: poor food quality and portion size - high prices more

You'll Need a "Jarro" Later 1/9/2009

DO NOT EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! Drive right by, do not get out of your car. Pros: Colorful Decor Cons: Horrible Food more

Bad service, Bad Food 1/6/2009

Went for lunch on Sunday, ordered the El Jarro #3. Received 1 medium warm, mushy taco, with an ok salad. Cheese enchiladas and rice and beans were served cold on a cold plate. Never received a tortilla. Food was not worth eating. Complained to waiter who just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. more

Truly horrible, awful service - I will never go back 11/15/2008

The service was so bad, it was laughable. Slow food, drink and check service. Very unattentive. Don't even bother. Pros: Parking, location Cons: Service and value! Crammped seating. more

Forget the customers, owner is in it just for the money. 9/14/2008

Last Friday evening was like a horror movie for my husband and me. We arrived at El Jarro de Arturo at 7:10p.m. and asked to be seated up front for dinner and for their live entertainment for that evening. We were told by the hostess (not the owner) that could be seated at around 8 p.m. Pros: It must have some somewhere Cons: Terrible service -- Dirty restrooms. more

Great Food, Awful atmosphere 8/8/2008

Did not like Asian people, though the food was great. I sat at the bar, the magarita was great and they made some extra special Hot salsa for me. Pros: Bartender Cons: Management more

I agree w/the awful service reviews...The quality of food has gone down to the ground also. 6/11/2008

I *NEVER* thought I would be saying anything bad about this place...I've been coming with my parents since I was a young child and loved it. Sadly, the service is despicable and awful now. They don't care and act like they are so much better than you even regardless of what you tip, like said below. They could honestly care less worse than probably any other restaurant I've been to. The last time I went hardly anyone was there anymore when it used to be packed up the wazoo and you would wait for hours, and I see why. I gave it about 3 more tries to see if it was just a bad day but the same thing. I've also noticed the quality of food has gone downhill. Its a shame to have one of the best restaurants in S.A. go to complete dirt. I am not a mean person but what is said about the front lady is true. And whenever we place an order to go she is RUDE and careless and never ever ever gets the order right. I used to recommend this restaurant to everyone and they all loved it before and we would have parties there even or when friends came out of town that would be our first choice, but my best friend had her party there not too long ago and it was sucky beyond belief along w/their attitudes. I felt really bad. I could not agree more with some of the reviews below. I can say more but i will leave it at that. This went from my first place to go(years ago) to my L A S T resort. Goodbye el jarro. Pros: USED to be the best Cons: Now the WORST more

Worst service ever 6/7/2008

Well....maybe I shouldn't say it was the worst service since it was more like NO SERVICE...we were a party of 10 and we had to go FIND a waiter and ask them to take our drink order. Fortunately, we went on a Sunday morning while there was a buffet and the food was very good. Another 'good' thing was there were pitchers of water and tea near by so we could fill our own drinks...wait, isn't that what waiters are supposed to do???? As we left we decided to speak with the manager so he would be aware of our dismal service and much to our disappointment (and i guess after the day we were having it should have been expected) he stood there with his arms crossed and only nodded, never saying a word....... Pros: Good food Cons: Worst customer service I've ever experienced more

Craptacular, no frills guest service 5/3/2008

I used to eat at El Jarro frequently when I first moved to San Antonio, the food is good- but sometimes a bit greasy- but I've found better around town. Pros: The cons outweigh any pros Cons: Poor guest service more
