Best

I took my aggressive, protective 3 year old 150 lbs Great Dane as a last resort to Duffy's. This was his last chance as he had already bitten people and was becoming dog agressive...

Worst

I rescued a 2-year-old blue heeler. Took her to Duffy's. She would perform great while in the building. Once we walked out the door, I couldn't even get her in the car. I REPEATED...

We have been so impressed with the results that we have achieved after just a week of training for our German Shepherd puppy. He can be a little stubborn, but after this week in day school, he is more attentive to commands and is no longer chasing the cat. He really seems to get along well with the employees that work there as well. more

I have known of Duffy's Dog Training since 1990, Matt trained my first German Shepherd Dog at that time. Matt's training along with his instruction to us and the continued work we did at home with our GSD made for a very well behaved member of the family for his entire life. The principles I was taught have helped me with each of the other GSD's I have had. Over the years I have also referred many friends and co-workers to Duffy's and they have all graduated with well-behaved fur family members.\r If you are looking for a training program for your fur family member I would encourage you to check out Duffy's Dog Training Center. They are experienced in dealing with all types of dog personalities and can help with training as well as any specific issues you?re experiencing or might experience. The facility is very clean and roomy; there is also a large outdoor area with agility obstacles that are incorporated in helping your dog gain confidence. Your dog will be trained by multiple trainers and around other animals during training, thus becoming a well behaved pet in environments outside of home and learning to pay attention to your cues instead of distractions. The trainers are all very knowledgeable and truly have a love for dogs. Their approach to training does involve correction but there is much more praise, pets and food rewards used then there is correction. The correction is just that, it is not punishment; there is no striking of the animal or scolding in anyway. The entire process is based on keeping everything as a positive experience for the dog and handler, even if a correction is needed. To get the most from your training experience you have to be willing to do the work, yes that means continuing to work with your dog outside of his/her 12 days of school and your individual lessons, on a daily basis. If you do the work, you will be satisfied with the results both you and your fur family member achieve.\r In November of this year I adopted Argus from Tierhaven Rescue, he is a young male approximately 15 months of age that was picked up as a stray. He is definitely puppy and one of the biggest goof ball personalities I have come across. Within 24 hours of having Argus at home I realized he was extremely intelligent and has great potential to be more than just a well behaved family member. I contacted Duffy's for an evaluation and Argus started school that week. He has completed his 12 days of school and I have had 2 of my 7 lessons. My lessons will continue every other week for 2 more months. Between lessons Argus and I practice the skills I am taught and he has already learned in his 12 days, with each lesson expanding on the earlier ones. We spend 15-30 minutes at least twice a day doing our "" homework"", we incorporate the hands free commands in normal activities such as our walks and random times around the house. He has already learned so much and I know with continued work at home he will continue to improve and amaze me. Argus likes going to school, enjoys the work and likes the trainers he works with and yes he still has his goofball personality. With the help of the trainers at Duffy's Argus and I are well on our way to obtaining his Canine Good Citizen Certificate and then we will work on his therapy dog certificate to be able to visit in local nursing homes etc. We will keep you posted on our progress. \r Adressa & Argus more

We are on our 3rd German Shepherd being trained at Duffy's, We started with them over 14 years ago, sadly we lost him a few months ago. But now we are onto a feisty 5 month old GS pup that our daughter got and he is keeping the 8 year old GS young. Any way, Took the puppy to Duffy's because after having the other 2 trained there, we wouldn't dream of going anywhere else, they are simply the best, otherwise we wouldn't have gone twice before. Our other 2 dogs were/are so well behaved and get complimented on how well they walk with us etc all the time. The new puppy was really bad about jumping & barking... within two classes Duffy's had nipped this unwanted behavior in the bud! No more jumping, minimal barking, he is now on class #5 and this is not the same puppy!!! His manners are astounding! Don't get me wrong, he's still playful and bouncy and fun, just, when he want's to go outside, he waits to be invited not rush out as soon as the door opens, (oh and he rings his bells attached to the door to let us know too!:-) So smart! He doesn't ""attack"" when you go to feed him, he waits till you tell him he can have it. He will sit and come when called. And he's 5 months old!! There are a lot of other things, but just basic manners are the best. You owe it to yourself and your dog to get the proper training, It makes everyone's life so much easier, and if your going to pay to have your dog trained, do it right the 1st time and go where they know what they are doing, go to Duffy's!! more

When we adopted our nearly three-year old doodle, she had been pretty much a 'farm dog', left on her own to bark, chase, eat (or not) when and wherever she chose. \r Our vet suggested Duffy's and we've seen a great improvement in all areas. Honestly, I need more training than she does at this point. There are family sessions to make sure that owners understand and reinforce the smart choices your 4-legged kids seem to make very happily at the facility. \r For me, Duffy's has been an eye-opener. Good behavior is all about understanding what's wanted, not just a series of loud one-word demands. \r Thanks! more

I highly recommend Duffy's for dog training! I have an almost 5 month old feisty German Shepherd. Although her radar rabbit ears exude cuteness, I also saw her inner career aspirations as she chased and took down both of my preteens like a police K-9 at 12 weeks old. \r \r I knew that she would make a great guard dog, but I also wanted her to be under control and able to socialize with other dogs and people. And lawsuits, no one wants lawsuits.\r \r I decided that the investment to have a well behaved dog that I will own for 12 + years was well worth purchasing the full training program. She has completed 2 full weeks of daycamp and I have completed 2 human classes with our assigned trainer Tyler. Her training is not yet complete, but already her manners have significantly improved. She will wait for permission to exit a door, she walks without pulling on the leash, she waits for permission to interact with other dogs and people, and she knows the basic commands of sit, down, stay, and come. She still bites me when I put her dog seat belt on, but that is not covered in the training and she would much prefer to ride in my lap.\r \r The staff is wonderful and are always thorough and helpful in answering my neverending questions. With their tips, her housetraining and chewing also improved. At this time, I can say that she has not yet chewed up any of my belongings, unlike my friend's puppy who ate her couch and three pairs of shoes. #saveyourcouches #saveyourshoes \r \r Duffy's uses a combination of correction and positive reinforcement. If you understand that dog pyschology differs from human psychology, then you will enjoy learning these skills as much as your dog will. If you push your dog around in a stroller or spend paragraphs trying to reason with your canine companion, then you might want to start with a psychology class. That's just a joke people, kind of a joke...\r \r Mr. Duffy has also written two excellent books, ""Ten Natural Steps to Training the Family Dog"" and ""The Eight Faces of Aggression."" I highly recommend them to better understand your dog, although I do not recommend giving them to your 13 year old human version of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory, who will quote every wrong move you make when training your dog.\r \r I hold Mr. Duffy, Tyler, and all the staff in high regard, and will be a long time member of this training facility. I look forward to more advanced classes in the future, such as agility or search and rescue. Of course, I'm still holding out hope for ""Teen Parenting by German Shepherd."" more

I have loved my first experience with Duffy's Training Center with my foster dog, Roper. They have been there through the frustration, tears, and complications of trying to put a dog reactive and defensive foster through training. I have seen a marked improvement in his behavior and his manners are coming along. It is definitely reassuring when the trainers will admit that your dog is even stubborn with them and will go the extra mile to help however they can in just a few quick minutes at pick up knowing our limited capacity to pay for the training as a nonprofit organization. I highly recommend their trainers and have never had a negative experience with anybody there. Whenever I decide to adopt a dog years down the road, I will be using their full training program. more

In December my Husband & I took a cute 7 week old lab puppy into our home. Being first time pet owners, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We love our puppy & wanted to make our home his too, but had no idea how to go about doing it the right way. It wasn't long after he was updated on his shots that we began looking for a dog training center & came across numerous 4 & 5 star reviews of Duffy's. I took Hoosier in to get a free evaluation & it seemed as though they nailed his personality & tendencies right on the head. I knew it was the right place for us. I am just about to drop Hoosier off for his 5th day at Doggie Camp & we are astonished on the differences we've seen already. Their techniques are brilliant & we've watched the dvd several times to reference how we should work on these things at home. We will definitely continue bringing Hoosier to Duffy's! more

The trainers are very positive and patient with the dogs. We are very pleased with our results so far and look forward to additional training. more

Eleven years ago, I found my four-legged ""soulmate"", Toby. He was a gorgeous rescued Rottweiler with the sweetest temperament, and he loved to train. Being an experienced dog owner/trainer, and a former veterinary assistant, I assumed I would be able to train him with no problem. Well... not so much. He was other-dog aggressive, and extremely powerful. I was completely ill-equipped! I had heard terrific things about Duffy for years, so I started taking Toby to private lessons. I learned read more ? SO much! My skills grew, his problems lessened, and he became the most wonderful big boy ever. Over the years, he eventually grew to have several doggie friends, including my own two miniature Dachshunds, with whom he showed the greatest patience and gentleness. Matt and David helped me turn a good dog into the BEST dog! We lost our sweet boy to cancer this year, and he has left a huge hole in our hearts, and in our home. Now, I am bringing my tough little ""weiner dogs"" to Duffy's to continue the legacy, and to brush up on my skills. I want to be able to take them everywhere I go, and possibly train them as therapy dogs. We are on our way! Matt and David feel a little like family to us, because they helped us make our family what it was, and what it will be again. I tell everyone with a big dog, a problem dog, or a new dog, about Duffy's Training Center. Most often, it is the owner that is causing the problem, not the dog, and our pets deserve better from us. Duffy's gives you the tools, your dog gives you all the rewards!!!. more

We own two very energetic boxer puppies and were having a hard time curbing some of their undesired behavior. We did the free evaluation, which Duffy's offers, and discussed the issues we were having with the pups jumping on people and not respecting boundaries, going for food that did not belong to them, and pulling when on leash. We could tell right away that the experts at Duffy's knew their stuff. After only 2 daycare sessions, our pups' behavior improved noticeably. They are much more respectful of our space, more attentive to commands, and walk on leash with little to no difficulty. As with most pups they are still a work in progress and need a lot of direction, but I feel confident in their continued improvement because of the training they're receiving from Duffy's. If you're looking for quality training for your dog, I highly recommend these trainers. more

Excellent dog training center!! We were amazed at how well our staffordshire terrior responded to training at Duffy's. He learned quickly and is always excited when we arrive at Duffy's. We have a 41/2 month old German Shepherd puppy that was play biting to the point I couldn't touch him without being biten. After two short weeks he is the sweet, loving puppy I always dreamed of. They taught him some self control and taught me how to be in charge. Not yet 5 months old and walking on a loose leash, following simple commands such as sit, come, down and stay. The transformation has been amazing.Looking forward to more advanced training as he grows. more

We took our first dog Apollo, a stubborn German Shepard to Duffy's a couple years ago and they did wonders for us. Then we when got our second German Shepard, Aurora, who was even more stubborn, it was a no brainer to return to Duffy's for training. The staff is very knowledgeable and really works with you and your dog. Our dogs even like going there! We will never go anywhere else for training with our dogs. more

We are now in the process of the obedience training classes for our 1 year old German Shepherd. He was such a wild child when he started. He now has learned so much and obeys so good, thanks to Josh, our trainer at Duffy's Dog Training Ctr. Hours of arrival and departure are very flexible so I take him before work and pick him up after work. The entire staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. When we arrive in the morning my dog, Ruger is so happy to see everyone. He loves all the staff. I am happy we found Duffy's. Thanks Jacque more

Editorial review from Citysearch 3/5/2014

My husband and I adopted our first dog 2+ years ago when he was a 4 month old puppy. My only criteria for us to have a dog was that he received proper training. I asked around, and received information about Duffy's. After setting up a free evaluation, we met our trainer David. The program seemed to be exactly what we were looking for: an individual training with an individual trainer, separate lessons for our dog to learn before we were trained as handlers, and ongoing training once he had completed the training. To say that we were satisfied is a complete understatement. Everywhere we go, we are told how well our dog behaves, and how they wish that they could get their dog to behave like that. It's as if they think we just lucked out and ""got a good one."" True, our dog is one of the good ones, a sweet lab/great dane mix, but he is far from perfect. No dog is born well mannered. They are trained into such behavior. Duffy's offers a team of highly qualified trainers that INDIVIDUALLY assess your dog, and train them accordingly. I want to respond to most of those commenters by saying, ""Well, maybe you should get your money back from Petsmart."" The truth is, if you are looking to get your dog to shake your hand, Petsmart is your place. But, if you are looking for your dog to come when called, stay silent while walking next to a group of other dogs while on a walk, stay upon command, and to mind their manners when guests come into your home (a dog's most defensive and territorial place) then Duffy's is your very best choice within the Louisville and Southern Indiana area. Manners are the HARDEST thing to teach a dog. They are willful, strong, and crave order. This training is top notch. The price is definitely more than a set of unproductive PetSmart classes, but you get what you pay for. On average the undivided attention that your dog will receive is nothing compared to the attention YOU receive as a handler. The staff is extremely attentive and completely patient while they train the most stubborn clients of all: pet owners. Pet owners are in such denial of their dogs' behavior. They think that terrible habits are adorable and they make tons of excuses. The trainers, especially David, are incredibly thoughtful in teaching you to work well with your dog.\r \r Not only would I recommend Duffy's but I would go as far as to say that our training through them is the single biggest factor that helped me to bond with our dog. We loved the experience so much that as soon as we adopted our second dog, we took him as soon as he was old enough back to David. The strongest testament, however, is not how we feel about Duffy's. It's our dogs' opinion. Our older dog knows as soon as we turn down the street where we are going. He goes crazy: whining in anticipation, wagging his tail excitedly, and can't wait to jump out of the car to get inside. He loves Duffy's as do we. \r \r Do yourself a favor, and at least go for the free evaluation. Notice the people that are there when you are. They'll be seeing their own trainer for their own individual assessments and lessons. Do us a favor, too, and join the club of owners with well-behaved dogs so that we can open our own dog park! more

Everywhere we go in the community people remark how well-behaved our dogs are and we give the credit to Duffy s Dog Training Center. We have 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks and this breed is characteristically strong-willed. With the guidance of David (our trainer), our dogs are capable of doing more than following the basic commands. Recently, my oldest dog passed the certification exam of Therapy Dog International with only one week of preparation and he was trained at Duffy s in December of 2011. If you have a dog or dogs that you walk one day and have to go to the chiropractor the following day: you need to call Duffy s Dog Training Center right now. more
