Best

The BBQ is tasty, though it can be greasy coming off the buffet. Make sure to spoon from the top, or order off the menu. Fried chicken is good too. Actually, my favorites here...

Worst

The barbeque is as good as it gets, but the decor needs to be buffed up a bit. Also, doesn't leave the impression that it's the cleanest place around.

don murry's - 20 years w/o DON, and finally out of business 10/1/2012

Don Murry's ran a good 20 years after Don sold it, but they are finally out of business. Pros: great place Cons: closed more

My Aunt and Uncle owned this place. 8/10/2010

My Aunt and Uncle owned this place. They sold it to people from India. Now, I'm not holding any animosity towards anyone from India, but adding curry to the recipie was a mistake that could only be made by a foreigner...lol.. (BBQ does not have curry). I once tried to swallow any silly feelings I had about the place and go in and try the fare. It was a disaster. The siding was falling off of the outside! This would not have been allowed when my aunt and uncle ran this place. The food was horrible, and contained CURRY! I dont think you could make this up. They went out of business, or sold, I heard...I dont know which, but I cannot go back there anymore, it's too upsetting. They also watched me like I was going to steal something, and the family feeling was gone..but this might be because I had diffrent memories of the place...when the iced tea was free....lol. more

Best place to get Poisoned if it was still open. 9/11/2007

I cannot remember how long this restaurant has been closed but it has been several months and I cannot say I was sad to see it go. Pros: The price was not that bad Cons: Served UnCooked Chicken on buffet & the resaurant is now closed more

Great BBQ on the buffet., 1/29/2007

One of my favorite lunch places. Great bbq on the buffet, better than Carolina BBQ or Smithfields BBQ. Buffet also has home made chicken pastry that is very good. The best days to go is for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they served fried porkchops on the buffet. They are awesome! Service is first notch, no smoking, which I love! Pros: Great BBQ, Fried Pork Chops, and fresh collards Cons: Occasionally run out of fried pork chops on Tuesdays and Thursdays.. more

Classic NC BBQ and more 1/16/2003

The BBQ is tasty, though it can be greasy coming off the buffet. Make sure to spoon from the top, or order off the menu. Fried chicken is good too. Actually, my favorites here are the fried trout and the amazing chicken pastry. more

Better than most 1/8/2003

Don Murray's is pretty good, and the lines to get in will confirm that. It is authentic east-coast North Carolina barbeque, which means chopped pork with a vinegar-based seasoning....not a sauce. There's no tomato or molasses, which is exactly the way God intended. Those who think barbeque is ribs, burgers, or chicken with a thick, tomato-y, sweet sauce will be disappointed. Anyone who knows what barbeque is supposed to be will be delighted. Pros: Great value, Friendly/fast service, Great food more

Barbecue and fries 9/18/2002

Barbecue sandwich and fries is a winner. Good choice of vegetables and meats on the buffet. Pros: above avg portions, great fries Cons: smoky atmosphere more

Best BBQ no fuss, no rush. 9/5/2002

The best NC BBQ in a long while. If they keep up the great food and friendly service. They are going to build a solid reputation than cannot be chopped by any BBQ joint. Pros: Inexpensive, Great Location, Good Food Cons: No view, Toilets need updating more

Hog Heaven 8/29/2002

As a lifelong connoisseur of Southern barbecue, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I discovered Don Murray's after moving to Raleigh in 2001. Their chopped pork with its subtle flavor-enhancing sauce is simply the best I've ever tasted. Their hushpuppies are yummy and always crispy fresh. Going to Don Murray's occasionally is one of my favorite treats. Pros: Fabulous barbecue, Friendly wait staff, Incredible value more

Yuck 8/28/2002

Lunch buffet of low-quality heated, canned veggies, and some seriously mediocre chopped port. Go to ""Murray's"" on Old Poole, instead. Pros: quick Cons: quality, service more
