When this hotel opened in the 1960s it was an absolute jewel! it had antique furniture in the lobby and huge crystal chandeliers, rosewood doors and oriental carpet, and when i went back there to see about the supposed remodeling (was there nov 2008) i was shocked at how horrible it is. the lobby is unrecognizable. it looks worse than a hostel! i wanted to take the escalator from the parking garage on the ground floor up to the lobby but its been removed! ( yes the escalator is GONE! ) then the elevators were out of order. its enough to make a grown man cry to see what it was and what it has become. im not sure anything short of demolition could help at this point. i wonder what kind of idiots have been managing this property over the years that they let a beautiful building which was richly decorated, succumb to this level of ruin. do yourself a favor and pass it by. you will be saving yourself a depressing sight and im sure the service and rooms cant be much better than the lobby. i havent seen anything this bad since the michigan central station closed! the amazing thing is this building is still open for business! its a blemish on detroit
Pros: its downtown
Cons: there are a lot of alleys downtown and they are about comparable
