Best

Dessert Noir is a downtown portland quality cafe in the heart of Beaverton. I have never had a bad meal there. Everything from their shrimp appitizers to their chocolate Velvet ...

Worst

I wrote a review for this place last year and it was removed. I find that a bit sneaky. But I saved it and here it is again! We will see what happens! 11/23/08 I also went t...

disappointed....avoid at all costs!!! how are they still in business??????? 8/11/2007

We went there to eat last weekend since I got a $50 gift cert that I purchased from katu for $25. There was not one thing about the restaurant that would make us go back. The deep fryer was broken so many things on the menu were not available to eat. There was no kids menu at all and both my husband and my daughter wanted a nice restaurant cheeseburger and they only have goat cheese and blue cheese for all their dishes. My husbands "no cheese" burger came to the table and it looked like a 1-lb burnt meteor of meat out of a sci-fi movie! It was ridiculous that they even tried to put it on a bun it was so odd shaped and charred...We had very poor service and sat waiting for the bill for about 15 mins...and we were only 1 out of a couple tables full of people. My Prawns looked as if they came out of the freezer and had no taste besides some cayenne pepper...food is too bland and it seems like they make up for this loss of flavor by throwing on pepper...the people sitting near us were also upset at the lack of cheese varieties and the waitress was less than nice and replied back, "well do you want something simple, or extravagant?" as if the customer was being difficult!!! the same customer had to return her drink 2x's because it didn't taste good...overall would never go back and i dont see how they are iin business! dont waste the time... Pros: only the ambience... Cons: everything else...food, service, value more

Great Deserts, Wonderful Customer Service! 6/2/2007

We just got back from dinner and desert here for my birthday. I would hightly reccoment this place for several reasons. The food was ok... nothing amazing, but still very tasty. My husband and I split the Velvet Elvis which was amazing!!! We were served by the owner, who forgot to start our food promptly, but more than made up for it. He brought us a wonderful salad while we waited (at no charge) and also gave us a discount on our meal. The atmosphere was nice and the music was great. This place was just ok.. until you count the service and the desert. I give it two thumbs up. =) Pros: Great Desert and service Cons: Would like more of a dinner and desert selection more

Dessert Noir 1/11/2007

I've dined at Dessert Noir on two occasions now. To date, the food and service has always been to my liking. The only criticism I can offer is that the bar stools can be very dangerous and should be replaced. They look great, but functionality comes second. I saw a middle-age gentleman fall backwards and narrowly avoid catching a table corner with the back of his head. Once you commit yourself to the backrest, lookout! Secondly, the wait staff should be instructed not to wear perfume or cologne. It doesn't go well with the fries, if you know what I mean. Noticeably improved was the music volume. On our first visit the musician had a bad case of amplifier overkill. People come here to visit and eat with friends. Music should be in the background, not the main course. On my second visit the volume was perfect so they may have this in check now. Lastly, one cold evening last November we had the misfortune of sitting at the only open table in the house. It was near the door so we were treated to a windstorm every time someone entered or exited. You may want to consider placing something in front of the door to divert the airflow so as not to ruffle your customer's feathers. Something tasteful yet functional, like a curtain or etched glass panel the width of the door would be sufficient. I know the owner is open to criticism and very dedicated to improving her establishment... it shows she's got what it takes to make it in this business. more

Great desserts! 1/11/2007

I love their velvet elvis!! I've only been in a few times but have gotten it every single time. I just turned 21 last week and I cant wait to go on a Friday or Saturday night! I have been wanting to try their dessert drinks. Pros: Parking, yummy desserts! Cons: I wish they offered more desserts more

Worst apple crisp ever 10/27/2006

My friend had read in citysearch how great this place was supposed to be, so we dropped in for dessert on Friday night. We were struck by how few desserts were offered at a "dessert" restaurant. The live music was a harpist/vocalist, which would have been nice except that the volume was way too loud. The microphone seemed unnecessary in this small space, and it was very difficult to have a conversation. We ordered the apple crisp (a special), which tasted like a crushed Powerbar with walnuts on top. Usually when I go out for desset I am not looking for something to taste so "healthy". Our server never checked on us, asked us how our food was, or acknowledged us leaving, even though she was standing at the register. However, we did see someone who we assume was the owner working hard and greeting and thanking customers. Pros: Hard working, attentive owner Cons: Bad apple crisp, inadequate servers, music too loud more

WORTH GOING BACK FOR 9/22/2006

This place had/has some kinks to work out. For example, the first time I went there (2005 when they first opened) I ordered a pasta with chanterelle mushrooms. Pretty expensive. When they served me the plate, they said they ran out or chantarelles and gave me just regular ones. For that price? No way, I sent it back and ordered something else. I couldn't beleive they didn't tell me or ask me if I wanted something else before it was cooked. I would have gotten ripped off if I wasn't careful that night. Went there about a year later (September 2006) and again they were out something someone at my table wanted, but did tell them up front. But, that night, I had the apple chicken salad which was GREAT. Very yummy and very fresh. Good portion for the price. Had the chocolate hazelnut mosse for dessert which I was hesitant to get becuase I nornally don't like hazelnut, but loved it. The other people at my table liked their dishes too. But I crave that apple chicken salad now and will definatly go back for it. more

Swearing off alcohol... 8/27/2006

I ordered ONE drink here a while back, and wow was it awful! It was so spiked, I had to pu ke right there in their bathroom (and I can normally hold alcohol pretty well...I use to do a handful of shots and be fine). Only a couple sips of my cocktail at Dessert Noir made me absolutely sick (I didn't even finish). I decided to swear off alcohol for a while because of this! The bartender needs to watch it. Cons: cocktails more

Great setting + AMAZING dessert! 8/1/2006

I went to Dessert Noir a while back and I was so impressed! Great atmosphere and the seating both inside and outside was attractively arranged and classy. It's much better than what you normally find in the suburbs--a little pricey, but you certainly get what you pay for. I had the Tiramisu and an espresso macchiato... Tiramisu is my favorite dessert, and this must have been the best I've ever had. The coffee was robust but not bitter, with good body, and attractive in its presentation. My friend ordered some kind of heavenly chocolate thing which tasted great, and the presentation was outstanding! Definitely go to Dessert Noir--it's a great place for a date or a classy dessert/drink amongst friends or solo. more

Friendliest Staff w/ Excellent Drinks 7/16/2006

Being relatively new to town, I have been trying out different spots to eat/drink/chill pretty regularly, and I must admit that Dessert Noir has something very special about it. I went on a Friday Night and found that they had a live DJ putting out the type of music thats perfect for sitting down with a friend and having a drink or two (perfectly made drinks might I add). Although I did not have any food that night, I am confident of its taste because I was able to witness several customers praising the chef and the owner for how good their meals were. Which brings me to my final point: this is the type of spot where the owner feels accountable and the chef takes part in everyones meal. There are few places you can go where you leave feeling full even without eating, and for that I recommend Dessert Noir. more

Yum in the burbs..again! 7/11/2006

I have been here before and written a review. But I have to tell everyone that Dessert Noir has gotten even better than it used to be. I think all restaurants go through cycles and this one is at an all time high right now after some rocky months when it seemed like they might have been having a staffing issue. The food has been scaled back a bit and focuses on really good, high quality items. Have you had their excellent Mushroom/Tarragon soup? It is to die for! The desserts are HUGE and delicious. My favorite has always been the Velvet Elvis - but I cheated on it last time and ordered the raspberry torte! Oh my goodness - dark, delicious and dangerous! The mixed drinks are creative and well priced. I am a huge Chai fan, so LOVE the Chai Hazelnut Martini. the staff are friendly and the owner very attentive and personable! I'm happy that there is still somewhere good to go nearby my apartment that isn't a chain! Pros: Decor, food, drinks Cons: People haven't found it or need to try it again!!! more

Rude chef and out of many things 7/11/2006

We went here a couple months back. I have had mixed feelings prior but decided I would try it again. I ordered a chicken wrap with no lettuce and a side salad instead of fries. Not too difficult, right?? Right after placing the order the chef (I guess that is what he is) comes out of the kitchen obviously very upset. He starts yelling at the waitress (who happens to be standing right next to me). He could not for the life of him understand what type of person would order a sandwich without lettuce AND a salad instead of fries. She replied that was just what I had asked for and that she didn't see the problem. He continued for several minutes ranting about how ridiculous that was. Finally, after hearing the whole conversation I said, "hey, I am right here." He then retreated to the kitchen and made my oh so difficult order. To top it off they were out of most every type of alcohol, including the "Drink Special" of the day. I think the place has a lot of things going for it but I hope they get there act together and the "chef" learns a little about customer service. Pros: Environment Cons: Rude chef, running out of food/alcohol more

Delicious, Stylish, and fun! 7/10/2006

Why fight for parking downtown when you can go to a trendy, fun place in Beaverton that has delicious food & desserts and FREE parking right outside it's door. I had the Velvet Elvis and my mouth still waters when I think about it. I also have had their french fries - a heatrty portion that have got to be be fried twice since they are so crispy and yummy! Service was excellent and they have am impressive drink list and feature many Oregon wines. I'll be back. Pros: Desserts, PARKING! more

I expected more.... 7/5/2006

What is going on with this place?! This "dessert house" is more of a bar than a dessert house. The dessert was mediocre at best. I was told by friends that this restaurant had the best desserts in Portland AND Beaverton. It's better than most, but not the best. The complete balance of flavor, aromatics, and textures on one plate was not there. The plating seemed to hurried and a bit messy. Get some wine and some bruschetta. Pass on the rest. There are good ideas, but bad execution. Pros: Good bruschetta Cons: Desserts are not as good as advertised more

A New Hot Spot! 5/31/2006

My boyfriend and I discovered Dessert Noir while waiting for a movie to start (theater is next door). We had about an hour to kill and thought we'd get a drink, what we discovered is a cute little bar with great food, great drinks (I recommend the white chocolate martinis), and great service. There is live music on Fridays and it's just a classy little spot. We have since become regulars, and some nights rush to Dessert Noir (it's by my apartment) for a drink and the $5 happy hour fish and chips. I would recommend this place to anyone... just go on up to the bar, seat yourself and enjoy the music ...or chat it up with the staff. more

Gee..I wish I could tell you about the food.. 2/16/2006

My girlfriend made "desert" reservations for 8pm on V-Day at Desert Noir. While we knew it'd be extremely busy for all dining establishments; she was pleased to hear the hostess tell her that they had "plenty of spots open." We arrived earlier than our scheduled time, but the hostess explained they were running low on food and might be closing. However she told us to take a seat. After we sat down, a waitress told us that they weren't serving anymore tables and that they "might" re-open one hour later with a limited menu. 1. How can such an establishment be so under-prepared for one of the busiest dining nights? 2. Why tell us to sit down, only to have us be told to leave w/ no apology? . Desert Noir - let me know when you're ready for the big time more

Worthy of a second visit. 11/12/2005

My fiance' and I went on a Sunday night and were seated after about 4-5 minutes of waiting. I counted 5 people at the bar and another 20-25 in the restaraunt with only a single bartender and one waitress who I could tell was new. In summary, the staffed was inexperienced and understaffed at least on this night. Now for the good part, the food is incredible. The tomatoe and brocolli soup was a perfect balance of texture and flavor. My cobb salad was well balanced and everthing was presented well. The desserts were also phenomonal and again, the presentation is top notch. You can tell they have a very talented chef. I did not have an entree but I will be back this Tuesday for there "2 for $22.0 deal-2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine for 22 bucks" I'll let you know how that goes... Pros: FOOD, DECOR, DRINKS Cons: SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE more

The worst $35 I ever had my boyfriend spend 10/27/2005

10-06 First visit decided to take my parents while they were in town. We walked in and loved the ambiance, however as the waitress approached us it was obvious she was unhappy and tired. We were surprised at the limited choices for desserts. We ordered a couple of desserts that tasted mediocre at best and my latte...well I have had better at an AmPm. The coffee was bitter as if the coffee grind was too fine and make the shots pour quickly. It was obviously not freshly ground...I did not hear a grinder at all. The lighting was terrific, deco okay, but the music choice was not appropriate for the setting. It was some alternative rock(good for a pizza place) and at one point we heard Korn. Not appropriate for a pathetic attempt at an urban setting in Beaverton. Spend the extra money and drive to NW for Papa Haydn's. 06-06 Second visit-8 months later. I wanted to forget about my prior experience and give it another try. My friend and I went in for a drink and appetizer around 4:30 on a Saturday. I ordered a mojito and we shared the smoked salmon spread. I sent the drink bad because it tasted awful and I substituted for a glass of pinot noir. The wine was okay, but the glass was scratched and looked awful. The smoked salmon spread was bland, and we kept finding chunks of cream cheese. Cuisinart perhaps would help? I will NEVER go back to this place. It was awful. Pros: nice people Cons: service, quality, overpriced more

The Perfect dessert. 5/7/2005

The desserts are AWSOME!!!!I am so impressed with their food and service; I have decided to try everything on the menu. I do have a few favorites though. The staff is friendly and fun to talk to!!! YUMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! I love this place!!!! Pros: Hand made desserts, friendly staff, Great atmosphere Cons: Parking sometimes, needs more entrée's, teen and up more

A splash of 'downtown' panache comes to Beaverton 5/4/2005

My new favorite after-work watering hole. This place has great ambience and a fun bartending staff who like to invent. Ask bartender Steve to make you a 'Washington Apple', or the specialty martini of the day. The dessert-in-a-drink idea has produced some wonderful concoctions to satisfy your sweet tooth. Discounted appetizers during happy hour are also a great deal. Friday nights are starting to feature regular local musicians, a bonus. Pros: ambiance, specialty cocktails Cons: limited dinner menu more

Love It!! 5/4/2005

I have been a regular at Dessert Noir since they opened & I must say I haven't ever had a bad experience. The cocktails are oh so YUMMY and I love the hummus during happy hour. I have heard the lunch menu is good; however, I have yet to go visit during my lunch hour. Dessert Noir is a must try!! Pros: Location, Good Happy Hour, Fun Atmosphere Cons: More informed staff more
