Del Mar Theater - A Historic Gem in Downtown! 1/9/2006

There is simply nothing nicer than seeing a movie in the opulent splendor of an old historic theater like the Del Mar. This theater is beautifully preserved. It is so hard to find theaters like this! If you like 'artsy' films, Del Mar has them. Lately, they have been playing more of the popular titles. There is the main theater which is by far the best place to see any film, especially an epic like 'Gone with the Wind'. The upper balcony has been converted into two very tiny theaters. They do lack the splendor of the main theater, which is decorated in gold gilt art deco motifs. You'll fall in love with this theater! Hopefully, you'll have the means to become one of the patrons who are helping to save it with donations!! more

Del Mar Theatre - Very Nice Experience 11/26/2005

The Del Mar has been refreshed, but still maintains that Art Deco feeling outside, in the lobby (and the ladies room!), as well as in the main theatre. They also host marvelous special screenings and events. I really like the people that work there - very friendly! more

Old Elegance 9/19/2005

The Del Mar is an institution here in Santa Cruz, it has been around forever. It shows more artsy films, rarely a widespread new release is in here unless it comes a few months later as a midnight movie. The midnight movies are wonderful, shown every Friday and Saturday night they range from the cult classics, like Super Troopers to the more recent, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabhan. As another reviewer raved, their popcorn is soooo good. Do yourself a favor and stop by, grab a nice big bucket of popcorn, usher yourself into the huge, red velvet curtian bedecked theater and enjoy a movie. Fabulous. more

Beautiful 8/20/2005

I am so glad the city decided to help buy and save the Del Mar. It's beautiful and plays an interesting variety of more “art house" movies. The decorations and especially the main theatre are grand. The popcorn is great with REAL butter it’s awesome. Plus it’s right on pacific downtown sc. more

Hollywood Glamour in Santa Cruz 8/17/2005

There are few "old" movie theatre left, but the Del Mar is an exception. The Del Mar made its triumphant return on Pacific Ave a few years ago after being restored. It's a good thing too. Del Mar has the coziest theatre seats and has that old time film feel while watching new (indie) movies. The screens are set behind red velvet curtains, making it feel as glamourous as hollywood. On Wednesday night at midnight, Del Mar shows older movies and hands out prizes to lucky winners. Midnight movies is an experience that many in Santa Cruz have come to know and love. more
