Being a licensed Nia instructor, I'd like to invite EveryBody out there to give this Mind-Body-Fusion-Fitness Workout a Try. The Nia motto is that through movement we find health. I find this true for myself and my students' lives who have been touched by Nia dance. Nia is not simply a cardio-feel-the-burn kinda class. It has something that can only be described as magical about it. Not only do you get a great physical workout, but you leave feeling emotionally, spiritually, and mentally refreshed. In Nia we work to get out of her heads and into our bodies. This allows the mind to quiet and for all of us to really be present in the moment, without thinking of all the to-do's and shoulda done's (is that correct english?).
Nia is like yoga in that it has 52 basic moves designed to align, energize and balance the body. It is a fusion of dance arts (modern, jazz, and duncan), healing arts (yoga, feldenkrais, and the alexander technique, and finally the martial arts (tai chi, tai kwon do, and aikido). And all of these fun moves are put to great musical selections. We also use the voice to release blocked energies from the body. We hiss, howl, let out martial art "hey/ha" sounds, etc.
If I've sparked some interest, check out the Decatur Healing Arts website for more information
