This place is the best South indian restaurant in the Bay area. The Sambhar here is better than in any other restaurant here. They have combo menu that nicely packages different foods into one plate. There is a good spread of all the good southy stuff from avial to rasam to different kinds of prepared rice. To top it all off the basundo they serve is terrific. If you like south indian food its well worth the trip to this place if u visit the bay area. more

not as popular as udupi but with more tasteful decor! 8/9/2005

when you stroll down the walkway of the stripmall at homestead and kiely in santa clara, walking from safeway to toki sushi, stan's donuts, and armadillo willy's, you'll pass jei learning center, longs drugs, some marshalls or ross or something, and also dasaprakash. dasaprakash will catch your eye because of its modern, south asian fusion look. it looks artistic, not like the old cheap indian buffets in the 1980s that just served a mish mash of tandoori chicken, daal, and naan. it looks nice. dasaprakash serves southern indian cuisine. unless you're clueless about south asian culture, you probably know that means, compared to northern indian restaurants, you're not going to find as much animal flesh served. in fact, most people just say that all south indian food is vegetarian, but then you'll have someone who'll protest and say that there _is_ carnivorism in south india, and i guess there could be. when you ask a silicon valleyite to name a good south indian restaurant, i think they'll first say udupi palace because it's so popular. upupi's always crowded and a bit of a madhouse, whether you go there for the lunch buffet or for dinner. anyway, dasaprakash is much more calming and relaxing and more of a place you can go for a quiet dinner. maybe you'll even go there on a date. the food's good. they give you plenty for your money, and it's a good deal. the service is also rather attentive and polite. of course, if you want the most luxurious south asian restaurant available, you'll probably still head to amber india in santana row, but let's not mention that here. more

worth a visit 8/5/2005

Southern Indian cooking is one of the great cuisines of the world, rigorously vegetarian, intricately spiced, dominated by tart, fiery stews. The best place to go for southern Indian cooking is the plush Dasaprakash, which is affiliated with a family-run chain of hotels back in South India. Many people in the Indian community consider Dasaprakash --- to be one of the very serious Indian restaurants in Southern California. Outside south India, it’s hard to find Sambhar that tastes right -even the best dosai place in Calcutta can’t duplicate the flavor. The Sambhars I’ve tried in Los Angeles have been terrible, but Dasaprakash gets the seasoning as right as may be possible here. Its a little on the expensive side, but worth a visit more
