AAA recommended we take our 4WD to D&H about 2 years ago to get a smog check. We have been going there for minor repairs ever since. In June of 2012 we took it in to get our smog check again however our check engine light just came on 2 days prior. We told them to see why the light was on and then smog it. They did a smog check first and everything passed, except for the visual check engine light ($90.25 loss). They then said they ran a failure diagnostic for an additional $270.00 fee. Called us and told us the test showed we needed to replace our catalytic converter for an additional charge of $2,602.83(after market price-original equipment $3,000.00). Upon checking 2 other shops we were quoted $1,500.00 and $1,250.00 to replace a bad catalytic converter. We called D&H up and told them; and all they could say was ?You can pick up your 4WD and pay the $360.25 for charges for smog check and the diagnostic check. WOW. We paid this amount just to get our vehicle back. (New battery dead when we picked it up and they had to look for the faceplate to the radio because they left the truck sit outside for 3 days before they even looked at it.) The check engine code was for a simple repair. We then took it to another smog check station and it passed with flying colors. Our catalytic converter is in good working order. Now we wonder how many times they ripped us off over the past 2 years. Warning ? This is why good mechanics get bad names. Please beware if you take your vehicle there. Get a second opinion so you do not replace items that do not need replacing, for twice what it costs elsewhere. This $365.25 loss was an expensive lesson we hope no one else has to learn.
