The Scene
A recent addition to the Detroit Avenue shopping mecca is Silver Craven, a jewlery shop specializing in, well, silver. While so-called players have long been partial to the flashiness of gold, silver is more laid-back, and this is reflected in the store's decor and attitude: It's definitely not a stuffy, overpriced gem shop. Silver Craven's main attraction is its rings, over 550 different ones, from subtle to skull. There are "poison rings," on which a center piece can flip from being a beetle to become a Celtic symbol; magestic (sometimes scary) finger armors; slide necklaces with separate pendants (including a particularly alluring deep-blue glass bead with fiberoptic threads running through it); and dragon cigarette holders from Bali. Ring prices range from $35 to $65, and other items are priced just as fairly.
Simply Silver
Being a new business, still in its development stages, Craven Silver is a work in progress. It could use something on the walls to complement the ecclectic selection of items in its display cases, as well as a better sign in the window. But the friendly, young couple who own the store--a husband-and-wife team with the surname Craven--know the silver market and travel all over the world to purchase their stock. Best of all, they're as helpful with informing their customers about products as they are with obtaining special orders.
