Not much variety 9/29/2005

This is a great restaurant, if the style of food they make is your cup of tea. Otherwise, you'll be starving. There's little variety in that most of the food is pretty much the same style and tastes alike, which works if you like it, and if you do not, it's really bad. I have unfortunately been dragged here many times by friends enamored by one dish or another (oddly enough, they never seem to like more than two or three things). Just not my thing. more

Great food, especially for vegetarians 8/28/2005

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in good food at reasonable prices. The menu is interesting yet straightforward and has many options for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. Plus, it is health conscious; the restaurant offers several low-fat options and many fresh salads. My favorite is the low-fat tuna salad although I often order heavier dishes like the black beans. The service is friendly and fast. This is a great place to grab lunch when you don't have a lot of time or money but still want a satisfying meal. more

2nd Best Calypso 8/17/2005

This Calypso (rotisserie chicken is their house specialty, with sort of a Caribbean feel to the joint) is good, but it's not as good as the location on Thompson Lane. The service is actually better than Thompson Lane, but the fruit tea often lacks the same quality as the other store and because they haven't been around for as long and they are different owners they haven't quite dotted all their i's and crossed all their t's, but they are definitely getting there. It's only crowded at this location around lunch, so it's a great place to go for a quiet dinner if you are looking for something low key and cheap. Would highly recommend it over the Elliston Place location, which seems to be preputually busy and nearly impossible to find a table at times. more

A Taste of the Caribbean 8/16/2005

It was my first trip to Calypso Cafe and to be honest, I was a little hesitant as I've never been a big fan of food that wasn't typical American fare. 4-years later, I'm still thanking God that my hesitation didn't stop me. My first dining experience was at the Elliston Place location right in the middle of the Vanderbilt School year, so I had to wait in a long line of college students to make my way to a cozy table in the corner. With this being my first journey I took a friend who would eat every meal from Calypso if she could. I was told I had to order the fruit tea because it was the best - again the hesitation set in, because typically fruit tea is sugar tea. Not in this case, the rich array of fruits added a nice sweetness to the tea without overpowering the taste. I was also told that the Black Bean Nachos with Chicken were the way to go for the first meal. I noticed that the nachos came with a side of barbeque sauce, again hesitant, but I went with it. The nachos arrived in record time, nice and hot topped with black bean dip, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream and green onions and jalapeños. I poured the barbeque sauce all over and took my first bite of this delicious dish. The sweet and tangy barbeque sauce is the perfect compliment to the nachos. I returned the next day to have the same dish. Over the last 4 years I have spent multiple lunches/dinners at Calypso Cafe and have tried everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. I've been on a Lucayan Salad kick lately and am always so full that I am able to skip my dinner meal. The service here is always quick and friendly and if you're not in the mood to eat in the restaurant, take out only take a minute or two. If you're in the mood for great food with a Caribbean flair, visit Calypso Cafe - you'll continue to go back, I guarantee it! more
