Being a townie, many friends were surprised that I had never been to The Courier Cafe. After my experience, I am trying to figure out what all the hype is about. This is an overpriced restaurant, with ok food. The service I had was rude and slow. The menu was very limited. I was honestly surprised that this was the restaurant that I had heard so many rave reviews about it. Perhaps, I caught the Courier on a bad day. I had lived her for 31 years before trying it. I do not see myself trying it again in the next 31 years. more

One of my favorites 3/22/2006

I love this restaurant!! It's a great place to go because there is something for everyone - they have a large menu with something for the vegetarian and meat eaters alike. And the food is SO GOOD. I LOVE the fries. The salad bar is also phenomenal. It's by weight, so it can get pricey, but it's so good. The desserts and baked goods are great. What you cannot miss is the milkshakes (peanut butter is my personal favorite). Great food, great atmosphere, good prices. more

My favorite lunch restaurant in C-U 2/11/2006

The Courier Cafe is an awesome place to go for lunch, especially if you like history or are with someone who does. Located in a historic local building with lots of artifacts (including a fun antique gumball game that kids love), the Courier has excellent food and a great atmosphere. They also have a distinctive menu that includes old time treats like egg creams and phosphates that you rarely see anywhere else. Their Reuben Sandwich is fantastic, which is often my best measure of a lunch restaurant, and the appetizers are very good. I've never been disappointed when I've gone there, and it's a great place to take my parents or in-laws when they visit from out of town. more

Good sandwiches 9/22/2005

The courier cafe is a local favorite, located in an old newspaper building. I've only had breakfast there once, since they stop serving breakfast at 11. The rest of their menu, however, is very good. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, but I would recommend getting a burger. They also have soda fountain drinks, and a salad bar. The soups are decent, but nothing great. Barring one experience with a surly waiter, I've never had bad service there. more

Award Winning local cafe 8/5/2005

This is an award winning local cafe. Many local people LOVE it! I personally like only its breakfast, mainly because I am a rice person and am not really into potato and bread. It locates at a corner of an old builing in downtown Urbana. Inside the restaurant they have a glass shelf showing the history of the cafe and some antiques. more

Inexpensive, cozy local place 8/1/2005

The Courier was the first place I ever ate at in the Champaign/Urbana area, and I found myself going back there a lot during my first few years in college. It's very cozy, but it's rarely crowded. The lighting is good enough to study by, but it doesn't have the cafeteria atmosphere that many other well-lit restaurants end up with. The menu is typically American, with no surprises, but it's pretty good and pretty inexpensive--the only two qualities college food requires. more
