When you adopt any rescue animal, you have to be someone who is willing to help. It is not about getting a good deal. We recently adopted Murphy(murphy's law maybe). She is an 8 year old cat, shy, maybe just scared, sweet, and we were told she had few teeth. She had been checked by a vet, however not everything is checked. This is a non profit organization looking for common serious illnesses. They cannot spend the thousands of dollars it takes to do a full medical evaluation on every animal. If the animal is eating and has tested negative for the usual viruses then to their knowledge it is basically a healthy animal. Everyone has to have the common sense it takes to understand that these animals generally have been neglected and possibly abused. I know for sure that we read the disclosure that said we are taking over the medical responsibilities for murphy and that they cannot know of any underlying illnesses she may have. We took her to the vet and well she needs a lot of expensive dental work 1,200 dollars. OUCH, poor murphy. Not only was she shaved due to matting, but her mouth must have been killing her. I know the Humane society did pull a few teeth, so I wondered why she still had bad ones. I researched my vet first and found out that teeth can deteriorate in days. What looks like a tooth that can survive today can fall apart in two days. So I didn't feel lied to or bamboozled. When I called the humane society back I asked for help and they gave it. They weren't rude and neither was I. I was honest, I can't afford such a cost all upfront for TEETH! I mean I'll do what it takes and use all my resources, but I asked for help because I felt it would be available. Health is always a mystery. I was sooooo healthy and boom one day I woke up and found I could barely walk. My doc called me healthy a month before. Who could have known and who could I blame. It was a fluke. I guess my point is, when you get a pet, no matter from where, you have to know that there will be a few bumps in the road and can get expensive at times. They are like young children, but a pet is a choice. If you are struggling in this economy, wait until times improve. Be smart, not impulsive. Be understanding not abrasive, and be caring not hateful. The wolrd has enough of that, so please help these wonderful organizations who are doing their best to help when you can. We adopted two kittens from the Quaker Hill humane society in early July. They were adorable and tiny, brother and sister and my 2 yr old was thrilled beyond the moon. I asked point blank if they were healthy and i was told YES. The evening of bringing them home the little boy had water stools and his eating was horrible. Took them immediately to our vet where we found out theyhad Giardia, a intestinaly parasite that humans can catch as well. Its very contagious. This meant we had to lock the cats up so my daughter would not get ill from touching their feet that had been in kitty litter. The following week was scary and we also found out they had horrible Respiratory infections. At the end of the week, the girl kitten passed away at our Vet office. It was heartbraking and we had fallen head over heels in love with them. Pros: None Cons: unsympathetic, rude, poor customer service. more
