As a New Yorker, the last thing I expected to see in Mansfield was an old fashioned luncheonette selling Coney Dogs and having pictures of Coney Island gracing the walls.
But the Coney Island Diner, in downtown Mansfield, is just such a place. Along with some antiques, the diner has some old black and white photos of the rides that used to grace the streets of Coney Island. There are booths, and an old fashioned counter for service. I would label it more of a luncheonette than a diner, but its the food, not the name that attracts attention here.
The main feature, the Coney Dogs appears to be a local concoction. The hot dogs are topped with a variety of items which includes relish and onions, and much more. Not the traditional dog I know well from Nathens, with mustard and sour kraut, but a dog that will delight the palate and make the kids roll their eyes with delight.
There is old fashioned lemonade, ice tea and Ive had their grilled cheese sandwiches, which ooze with cheese and I like it with tomato and bacon. There are big hamburgers and other dishes that are tasty, filling and all are reasonably priced.
If you are looking for a quick stop for lunch in the downtown area, and want something hot, filling and yet tasty and affordable, stop into Coney Island Diner and gaze upon some photos of the old Coney Island while soaking up the ambiance of the old fashioned luncheonette.
